Space Asia Hub opens with many first-of-its kind retail concepts – multiplex features flagship galleries of premium design brands from Europe and North America
Space Asia Hub
Space Asia Hub today made another leap in luxury furniture retailing with the opening of its S$50million multiplex, located in a cluster of three conjoined blocks comprising two unique heritage buildings in Singapore’s Arts District at Bencoolen Street.
The contemporary space of 40,000 sq ft which combines the charm of an old villa, a conservation shophouse and an ultra-modern glass block, will house new concepts by some of the top furniture designers in the world today. This list of who’s who in design includes those from B&B Italia/Maxalto, Carl Hansen & Son, Cassina, Dirade, Emeco, Flexform, Flexform Mood, Flos, Fritz Hansen, Giorgetti, Kartell, Moooi, Poliform, Varenna by Poliform and Vitra.
Mr Syddal Wee, General Manager of Space Furniture, Asia Operations, said: “The Space Asia Hub is a gallery of furniture design, second to none. The interiors occupied by each brand have distinctive characters of their own. From the dramatic vertical landscaped wall in the enclave occupied by B&B Italia/Maxalto, to the scenic verandah decks showing Flexform Mood furniture — each brand area has its own unique identity.”
The Villa offers a multi-sensory experience
The modern Glass Block with high ceilings is a commentary on design Heritage House provides contrasting interiors The first building on the Space plaza is an immaculate white bungalow, The Villa, which promises an experience for all senses – visual, audio by B&O systems, specially selected scent and culinary experiences.
Poliform displays wardrobe systems and loose furniture, whilst Varenna by Poliform on the top floor shows off live kitchen settings where Space will host a series of sitdown dinners for clients. Also on the same floor, Giorgetti expresses its artistic flair with plush sofas, bedding and sculptures, all portrayed as poetry in prologue, with item prices discreetly housed in wooden boxes in pau ferro and American walnut.

The contemporary Glass Block building stands at the centre of this multiplex and its windows are a riot of colours led by the eye-catching chairs in candy shades by Kartell on the ground, to the B&B Italia outdoor collections on the landscaped balcony on the 4th level.
The Glass Block is especially attractive at night with its lighting by Moooi. Other collections housed here include Acerbis, Cassina, Flos, Flexform, Fritz Hansen, Louis Poulsen, Moooi, Vitra and more.
Heritage House provides contrasting interiors
This archi-trio is completed by the Heritage House, a conservation shophouse with industrial-inspired interiors. There are two interesting lofts on the second floor, an area with natural skylight streaming in through wooden rafters.
These retail elegant sofas and bedding sets by Flexform Mood and Maxalto. The most noteworthy area in Heritage House is B&B Italia/Maxalto’s Courtyard (see picture) featuring an indoor three-storey high vertical garden wall. This space is the brand’s biggest international shop-in-shop display showroom in the region.
At the exterior, the Space Asia Hub takes on high drama with Driade Nemo chairs. These armchairs redefine outdoor seating with a life-like mask forming the back of each chair. What a theatrical sight!
Iconic furniture pieces
Mr Wee reflected, “Space Asia Hub brings together not just architect-designed interior environments but also the expression of world-class designers whose furniture and lighting pieces have been lauded through a few generations.”
Some of these iconic pieces are the Emeco Classic 10-06 Navy Chair, Flos Arco Lamp, Fritz Hansen Egg and Swan chairs, Moooi Horse Lamp and Vitra Panton chair. A sample of Louis Poulsen’s Classic Artichoke Lamp in gold is on display at The Villa and is available for commissioning.

The list of guests who visits Space is a who’s who of furniture design including Chi Wing Lo from Giorgetti and Marcel Wanders, Art Director of Moooi.
Support for local design
As part of its grand opening, Space Asia Hub will show its support towards Singapore talent by showcasing the winning pieces of the 2011 President’s Design Award from November 12 to December 11. This will be the first time that the prestigious awards are displayed in an international furniture design space.
In addition, Space has also launched the ‘Space Student Industrial/Design Programme’ which will kick off next year. Held in co-operation with DesignSingapore, this annual engagement allows two students from Singapore design schools the opportunity to take up an internship at a chosen top furniture designer brand based in Europe. Vitra will inaugurate by hosting the local design students in 2012.
Mr Wee summed up the Space philosophy:
“We believe in the connection between quality of design and quality of life, that designers and innovators have the power to shape and improve our world.
In showcasing only the very best design from around the world and supporting brands who devote themselves to excellence.
In people who are passionate above all else.
In authenticity.
Good design is eternal.
Life should be lived without compromise.”

With a wide stable of distinguished brands such as Poliform, B&B Italia, Maxalto, Cassina, Giorgetti, Moooi, Fritz Hansen, Carl Hansen & Son, Kartell, Flos, Emeco, Vitra and Space Accessories under its belt, it has established itself as a premium retailer of luxury lifestyle contemporary designs. In particular, Space Singapore, which started in 2001, has developed into Southeast Asia’s largest retailer for contemporary designs.
