Uig House
Type: Two Storey Modern House
Location: Uig, south Skye, Western Isles
Architects: Dualchas Building Design
Completion: 2006
A challenge was set with this project: to design a two storey modern building on an elevated site in Uig, Skye, which could exploit the views, yet be unobtrusive. A decision was made to clad the building in larch, so that when the timber weathered, the building would blend in to the colours of the surrounding hillside.
The large area of glazing to the front is given protection from the summer sun by a steel and timber trellis. This also incorporates a deck at ground level, which extends out from the two bedrooms and central study, and a balcony at first floor level, accessed from the kitchen.
From here the owner can view Uig bay, and watch the arrival and departure of the Outer Isles ferries. The dining and living area is open to the kitchen, with a solid oak floor and shelving bringing warmth into the interior.

Linsiadar
Linsiadar is a tiny settlement on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, the northernmost island of the Outer Hebrides. It has none of the density one would associate with a village or hamlet in England but is instead a loose grouping of ten crofts spread along half a mile of winding single-track road that in its isolation has sufficient coherence to function as a small community.

Spyon Cop sits high above the River Don overlooking the ruins of Glenbuchat Castle, on the Eastern edge of the Cairngorms National Park. Accessed via a rough hill track, the house sits on a steep slope, and has been designed as a reaction to the existing topography of the site, with the mono-pitch grass roof appearing almost as part of the hillside from above.
