A unique double-barrelled presentation surfaced an impressive mix of projects, teams and creativity in the only awards programme to dismantle divisions between the creative sectors. Together with media partners Urban Realm and The Drum, the Scottish Design Awards serve as a conduit for creativity of all flavours to flourish, proving that great design can add value to all aspects of our lives from the buildings we inhabit, to digital services, craft and our rapidly evolving workplaces.

This year the design field was dominated by Whitespace who rocketed past the competition to earn a Grand Prix for their work on Scotland at Night. The design panel, chaired by Hiten Bhatt, head of design at RAPP, had this to say: “A lot of people talk about how dark Scotland is. This turns that on its head. I’ve never seen anyone talk about a country at night. It surprises you and makes me want to visit Scotland.” Sue Dawn, executive creator at Interbrand added: “They didn’t over polish the filmmaking. They kept it authentic. It shows the world in a different light and it is well composed, shot and edited.”
Other big winners on the night included Playdead who walked away not only with the Design Agency of the Year accolade but also award in Experiential Design for Ray Harryhausen as well as Moving Imagery/Animation Design for Digital Competence Framework.
Landing the chairman’s award for design was Bature Brewery from Nigeria courtesy of a core product range designed by Pim-Pam Creative. Lauding its authenticity Bhatt commented: “This work instantly stood out for me. I never knew Nigeria had a thriving beer industry, and I was intrigued by the visual language in this range of products. They collaborated with various artists from Lagos, which meant the work had an authentic edge. It captured and celebrated West African craft and culture in an exciting way, using collage and illustrative character designs that tied into each beer. I love how this work champions the talent within the Lagos art community, as well as shining a light on Nigeria’s first craft brewery.”
The architecture domain of the awards proved to be no less successful with Konishi Gaffney and Entuitive leading the field courtesy of Lockerbie Sawmill, described as a ‘showcase for its owner’ by architecture panel chair Professor Alan Dunlop. Dunlop said: “As a business, they’re putting their stamp on the building. Simple, elegant, sustainable and a showcase for its owner.”
The prestigious architecture practice of the year title was bestowed upon Moxon Architects, a practice which has emerged on top of a difficult year with the completion of a stunning new headquarters at Quarry Studios, Aberdeenshire, not to mention Hams Way footbridge in Worcestershire, proof that architects can design vital infrastructure. Dunlop’s chairman’s award for architecture meanwhile went to Lower Tullochgrue, a bespoke extension of a traditional home within Cairngorms National Park by Brown & Brown Architects that works with its mountainous topography.
