The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were honoured at tonight’s Scottish Design Awards for their heroic efforts to save the majority of the Glasgow School of Art’s iconic Mackintosh building and its contents after a fire in late May.
Of the presentation, assistant chief officer Dave Boyle, the director of service for the West of Scotland, said:
“On behalf of SFRS I would like to say thank you for this recognition. It’s easy to overlook the huge challenge that faced our crews.”
The annual event which celebrates the best in Scottish design saw Glasgow-based design consultancy Suisse take home the Grand Prix for its work with the Scottish Maritime Museum and Freytag Anderson crowned Design Agency of the Year.
Held at Glasgow’s Radisson Blu, Suisse’s Scottish Maritime Museum work also took home a prize for Exhibition/Point of Sale and Freytag Anderson left with a total of four awards adding the Chairman’s Award, Corporate Identity and Packaging accolades along with the agency of the year nod.
Judged by an esteemed panel including Innocent Drinks Dan Germain, Lewis Moberly’s Mary Lewis, Stephen Royale of The Chase and Smith & Milton’s Steven Anderson, other winners included Stand for The Glasgow School of Art magazine 2014/15 (Publications), Tayburn for The Yard Annual Report 2012/13 (Corporate Literature/Annual Report) and Pocket Rocket Creative for Douglas Laing & Co Ltd (Packaging).
Whitespace racked up a total of four awards including App Design for the Scottish Government’s Greener Journeys App and Digital Design for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe ‘Enjoy Every Second’ animation.

In addition to recognising the best in visual design the Scottish Design Awards also rewards the nation’s finest architecture with Reiach and Hall Architects’ The Battle of Bannockburn Visitors Centre awarded the architecture Grand Prix and Foster + Partners scooped the Chairman’s Award for The SSE Hydro.
