Perth Monastery
The future of an historic 19th century Redemptorist monastery in Perth could be secured following the submission of a planning application by CALA Homes.
The neo-gothic St Mary’s Monastery has stood on the wooded slopes of Perthshire’s Kinnoull Hill since the 1860s – and has become an important international destination for both the Redemptorist Order and followers of all faiths as a spiritual retreat centre.
Now, the future of St Mary’s is at stake due to an urgent requirement to refurbish the internal fabric of the category B-listed building to allow it to meet modern standards and to continue as a retreat centre.
In order to meet the £2.5 million renovation bill, Redemptorist Trustees have established an innovative partnership with CALA Homes to develop a six-acre site owned by the monastery. CALA’s plans include building up to 19 detached family homes designed to sensitively integrate with surrounding countryside and woodland. 27 Jan
