International architecture firm RMJM has opened an office in the far east Russian city of Vladivostok, where the firm has landed commissions from the Russian Government for the design of two five-star hotels and masterplanning projects.

Vladivostok will be the host city for the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation) meetings in 2012 and a reported $5 billion US dollars is currently being invested in the city’s infrastructure and facilities ahead of the arrival of delegates and heads of state from the 21 member economies.

The 250-room luxury hotels, one for business travellers and the other for visitors, will be the only five-star hotels in the Primorskiy region and will cost some $200 million to build. RMJM is also working on two masterplans for the area which include plans for an eco-resort on Russky Island where the APEC summit will be held. The island will eventually be linked to Vladivostok by a new bridge, said to be the world’s longest cable-stayed bridge spanning 1104 metres.

While RMJM’s office in Vladivostok will be a project office at the outset, the firm’s Russia and CIS Chairman, Dr Vladimir Kvint hopes that it will expand in time and become a permanent addition to RMJM’s network of 16 international offices: “As host city for the APEC meetings, Vladivostok will be propelled on to the international stage, it’s a real opportunity to put the city and the region back on the map. With major long-term investment committed to the region, it is currently one of the few areas in Russia showing economic growth.”

Vladivostok will be RMJM’s third office in Russia where it has permanent operations in Moscow and St Petersburg. Projects in the country include the Okhta Tower and Centre for gas giant Gazprom, which will become Europe’s tallest tower.

Located over 9,000 kilometres from Moscow, Vladivostok is the largest city in the far east of Russia with a population of 800,000 people. It is Russia’s largest port on the Pacific Ocean and is where the great Trans-Siberian Railway reaches the Pacific coast and joins with sea routes.
