New York, NY (May, 2023) — Beyer Blinder Belle Architects and Planners (BBB) announce the completion of 200 Montague Street, a new 20-story, 121-unit residential building in Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn. Located in the Borough Hall Skyscraper Historic District, 200 Montague reinterprets the architectural essence of its historic neighbors to create a contemporary residential building for today’s Brooklyn Heights.

Built on the site of a four-story, modernist bank building that had been significantly altered over the years, 200 Montague’s distinctive design pays homage to its pre-war neighbors, while standing as a fresh, modern addition to the streetscape. The building’s dark, rhythmic, vertically articulated façade features a black granite base, profiled piers, bronze-tone metal detailing, and charcoal-grey colored window frames. The fusion of these materials provides depth, imparts a richness to the façade—much like the Art Deco, Gothic, and Romanesque buildings nearby—but with a dark tonality and contemporary architectural expression.

“Designing a new building in a historic neighborhood poses many challenges,” said BBB Partner Richard Metsky, “but we saw those challenges as an opportunity to create a contemporary design that would resonate with the surrounding historic skyscraper district.”

BBB was also responsible for the interior design of all aspects of the building: the lobby, elevator cabs, public corridors, apartment layouts and finishes, and the ample amenity spaces. The sophisticated, midcentury-modern-inspired interior design reinterprets architectural elements from the exterior to craft a cohesive tenant and user experience. All homes at 200 Montague are serene escapes from the bustling New York City streets, boasting an open, airy layout concept featuring oversized windows that amplify the building’s city views while welcoming natural light.

The 141,000-square-foot residential tower includes 7,000 square feet of retail on the ground-floor and cellar levels, rental apartments ranging in size from studios to three-bedrooms on the second through twentieth floors, and amenities including a landscaped rooftop terrace, private rear yard terraces, fitness and yoga rooms, resident lounge, children’s playroom, general and bicycle storage, communal laundry, and pet wash.
