The first meeting of the jury shortlisted ten finalists (five for each station) in the Open International Competition to design the architectural look of two Moscow Metro stations – Ostrov Mechty and Zagorye on the Biryulyovskaya Line.
Two New Moscow Metro Station Buildings Finalists
“The Biryulyovskaya Line will improve transportation in the south of the capital, including the rapidly developing areas of ZIL and Nagatinskiy Zaton and the renovation neighborhoods under construction. Considering the importance of the project for the city and Muscovites, it was decided to carry out an architectural competition to create the designs for the future Ostrov Mechty and Zagorye metro stations. Today, the 10 finalists, five for each station, have been named, and they will continue to compete for victory. I firmly believe that the competition results will enable us to choose the very best proposals and build unique metro stations that will take their rightful place on the metro map,” said Andrey Bochkaryov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow in the Moscow Government for Urban Planning Policy and Construction.
In selecting the finalists, on the basis of their submissions, relevant portfolio materials, as well as essays and attached visuals, the jury paid particular attention to the relationship between the competitors’ proposed designs and the architectural, cultural, and historical context of the neighborhoods surrounding the stations. The jury evaluated the proposals’ ability to meet the needs of all passenger types as well as modern day technological requirements.
“We have received fewer entries from foreign bureaus this time, but we have been glad to see many Russian teams that have participated in design competitions for metro stations before. Importantly, some of them have celebrated victories already, while others failed to qualify for the final for some reason. This means that the professional community has confidence in Moscow’s competition practice. We are truly committed to implementing each project with the greatest quality and as close to the design as possible, and we improve our level every year. The shortlist for the Ostrov Mechty and Zagorye metro stations includes real professionals, and no matter which project eventually wins, it will definitely be an unconventional and trendy solution optimized for the stations,” said Sergey Kuznetsov, Chief Architect of Moscow.
According to Yury Kravtsov, CEO of Mosinzhproekt JSC, the competition jury did a great job, selecting the most outstanding entries from the array submitted. “Eight individual participants and 2 consortia have been chosen. There is little doubt that Ostrov Mechty and Zagorye will boast a fantastic architectural look aligned with both the spirit of the times and the traditions of the Moscow Metro. For the builders, bringing life to the original designs of the two Biryulyovskaya Line stations will be an ambitious professional challenge. When they succeed, Muscovites will be able to appreciate not only the architecture, but also the convenience of the new routes,” Yuri Kravtsov said.
The jury decided on the following finalists:
Ostrov Mechty:
- Alexey Ilin Architects (Moscow, Russia)
- Consortium led by Architect Evgeni Leonov (Moscow, Russia) including United Riga Architects (Riga, Latvia)
- TOTEMENT/PAPER (Moscow, Russia)
- UNK Interiors (Moscow, Russia)
- Consortium led by Blank Architects (Moscow, Russia) including Clancy Engineering (Moscow, Russia)
Zagorye:
- VERTEX ARCHITECTS (Moscow, Russia)
- Architectural Bureau of T. Bashkaev (Moscow, Russia)
- Danila Sergeevich Tsarkov, Individual Entrepreneur, (DDD Architects) (Moscow, Russia)
- UNK Interiors (Moscow, Russia)
- AI ARCHITECTS (Moscow, Russia)
In the second stage of the competition, the finalists will revise their designs to meet the advanced technical requirements of the project and then present their final concepts to the jury. The jury will select a winner for each metro station at its final meeting based on the best concept submitted. The final results will be announced in August of this year.

The architecture competition is being held with support from the Moscow government and Sergey Kuznetsov, Chief Architect of Moscow. The competition is being organized by Mosinzhproekt Group of Companies, the main designer and general contractor of Moscow metro development programs. The quality and feasibility of the projects will be assessed by a professional jury chaired by Andrey Bochkaryov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow in the Moscow Government for Urban Planning Policy and Construction. The jury also includes Sergey Kuznetsov, Chief Architect of Moscow, Yuri Kravtsov, CEO of Mosinzhproekt JSC, Viktor Kozlovskiy, Head of the Moscow Metro, as well as leading Russian and foreign specialists in architecture, design, and urban planning.

Sergey Kuznetsov, Chief Architect of Moscow, Deputy President of the Jury: “I want to congratulate everyone on the completion of a key stage of the competition. We received plenty of applications from various countries, and if anyone was expecting competition to decrease, I have to say it’s not worth counting on that. The teams are absolutely impressive. We met many familiar names who had already participated in subway station design competitions, which means they have relevant experience. There are also very young bureaus that will surely surprise you with their fresh and extraordinary ideas.”
Yury Kravtsov, CEO of Mosinzhproekt JSC, clarified that 146 applicants from 36 cities registered to take part in the competition. “The competition aroused wide interest in the architectural community. We received so many applications that we now have no doubt that the Ostrov Mechty and Zagorye metro stations will look vibrant and fresh. Jury members will select the very best from the many applications received. Residents and guests of Moscow already have the opportunity to see the projects of past competitions, successfully implemented by engineers and builders. Now the creators of the Biryulyovskaya line will have a chance to bring new artistic ideas, innovative materials and technologies to their project. The main thing is that the result of work from the architects, designers and builders will be used by a huge number of people every day.”
The list of participants includes 7 consortia and 56 individual contestants. Most of the applicants are from 11 regions of Russia. The leader in terms of the number of companies is Moscow – 45, followed by St. Petersburg – 12, Nizhny Novgorod – two, one each from Vladivostok, Vladikavkaz, Volgograd, Domodedovo Moscow Region, Yekaterinburg, Kaluga, Rostov-on-Don, Yakutsk and Yaroslavl. About the competition sites
Ostrov Mechty is a future transfer station with Technopark station of the Zamoskvoretskaya line. The project includes an elevated walkway with travelators, two lobbies and exits to Prospect Andropova and the Ostrov Mechty Entertainment Park, as well as to existing and future residential, business, and public buildings and surface passenger transport stops. The station complex will be located on a section of the subsurface metro line. The design calls for two single-track tunnels to approach the station, resulting in the station being designed with a single island transfer platform. Due to the depth of the access tunnels, the station and one lobby will be located predominately underground. The station’s other lobby will be above ground. The underground zone includes a pedestrian crossing, one lobby, and the passenger platform. The second, above-ground lobby will include an elevated walkway (bridge) to Technopark station, ventilation ducts, and stairways and elevators with entrance halls with access to the surface.
Zagorye is a future station located along Lipetskaya Street. The station will have two lobbies, northern and southern. The southern concourse will have exits at the intersection of Lebedyanskaya Street and Lipetskaya Street. Both lobbies will have exits to Lipetskaya Street, which is adjacent to the Tsaritsyno natural-historical park. The station complex will be located on a section of the subsurface metro line. According to the design, one dual-track tunnel will approach the station, resulting in the station being designed with two transfer platforms. Due to the depth of access tunnel, the whole station will be located underground. The underground zone will feature pedestrian crossings, lobbies, and the passenger platforms. Only the ventilation ducts and stairways/elevators with entrance halls will have access to the surface.
