Moscow School of Management, Skolkovo Building

The School was founded in 2005 to promote an innovatory practice-based approach to management which will address emerging conditions in Russia and elsewhere in the world. Intended to be independent of the methodologies taught in other institutions, Adjaye Associates were commissioned to design a building that would represent these aspirations.

Due to its peripheral location, most visitors will arrive by car and, for day-to day purposes, the School will function as an independent community. This condition is further heightened in the winter months when the weather is cold and unpleasant. For this reason, the main elements of the School have been assembled as a single entity in which a range of facilities are easily accessible without going outside.

Apart from teaching and administrative staff, the School will be attended by students doing ongoing courses, who will stay in the long-term accommodation, and people on short courses or attending conferences, who will stay in the short term accommodation. The core of the project is the Disc where suites of teaching spaces, a congress centre, and supporting facilities form an internal cityscape bounded by a circular enclosure, an arrangement which is intended to suggest openness, cohesion and an absence of hierarchy.

Externally, the walls of the Disc address the surrounding landscape with unbroken continuity and locate the access road which serves a series of entrances at ground level. Pedestrian access to the Disc is also possible via several slow ramps from various points in the landscape.
