BDP’s The Point Voted The Public’s Favourite New Manchester Building At MSA Design Awards

RIBA Nominated Stadia Project Scoops Two Accolades At Cube Gallery Ceremony
BDP’s The Point, the new iconic stand at Lancashire County Cricket’s Old Trafford ground, was voted the ‘people’s favourite’ out of a total of 95 competing projects at the annual Manchester Society of Architects (MSA) Design Awards at Cube Gallery last night.

The MSA’s ‘People’s Prize’ is open to every project, in every category, that has been nominated for a MSA Design Award. The winner is decided by a ballot of visitors who have attended Cube’s exhibition of the shortlisted entries between May 5th and May 12th.

BDP’s combined spectator, conference and hospitality facility also took top prize in the Design Awards Leisure & Cultural category, beating off stiff competition from a number of high-profile projects including the revamped People’s History Museum, the new MOSI Revolution gallery and MMU’s new Sport Science Centre in Crewe.

BDP were also up against another of their own schemes in the category; the state-of-the-art Manchester International Visitor Centre. Gavin Elliot, Chair of BDP’s Manchester Studio and the chief designer of The Point, said: “While it’s great to have won in the best Leisure & Cultural category, I’m really proud we have scooped the MSA People’s Award this year.

“When the scheme was first announced the designs definitely raised a few eyebrows in both cricket and design circles, so the fact with nearly 100 top class projects to chose from the Manchester public voted The Point as their favourite is a fantastic endorsement of a truly innovative design.”

This is the second prestigious award BDP’s Manchester Studio has won for The Point this year. In March it won in the Lighting for Leisure Category at the national Lighting Design Awards. It has also been shortlisted for the RIBA awards which are announced next week.

The MSA exhibition of all entries and winners, including a number of BDP projects, continues at Cube until May 21st.

Old Trafford Cricket Ground Redevelopment

BDP Wins Lighting Design Award

BDP won the Lighting for Leisure Category at this year’s Lighting Design Awards at the London Hilton on 10 March. BDP’s lighting designers beat off stiff competition to take the top prize for The Point, a 1,000 seat events venue at Lancashire County Cricket Club.

The judges commented that the project was not only beautifully detailed and realised, but offered the client a flexible facility that will generate revenue in the future.

BDP provided exterior lighting to the façade, concourse area and stand, as well as internal lighting to the front of house areas including entrance, event space, bars, circulation areas and facilities.

The lighting showcases the bold and strong graphic identity for the new events venue, and the re-born cricket ground as a whole.

Brendan Keely, associate lighting designer at BDP, said: “Lighting within the leisure sector is very challenging as you are tasked with creating a stunning visual effect both internally and externally which needs to be as sustainable and energy efficient as possible. BDP’s lighting scheme for The Point is a great example of how this can be achieved, and I’m thrilled that the lighting industry has recognised our achievement with this very prestigious award.”

The unique architectural design of the scheme shifts the events space from a typical cocoon within the bowels of the stadium and floats it dramatically over the new spectator seating, creating shelter, unimpeded spatial flexibility and spectacular views out over the famous Old Trafford pitch.

BDP was also architect, interior designer and acoustic consultant for the building which was completed in June 2010, hosting England’s one-day international match against Australia as its first major cricket event.

Plans for Lancashire County Cricket Club redevelopment submitted to Trafford Council Bid to bring Ashes back to Old Trafford for 2013

Lancashire County Cricket Club and its partners have submitted plans to Trafford Council for the re-development of Old Trafford cricket ground and the surrounding area.

If approved, the development will significantly boost the Club’s prospects of bringing the Ashes back to Old Trafford and generate huge economic benefits for the area.

The proposals are part of an innovative sports-led regeneration strategy for a 50-acre mixed use neighbourhood in Old Trafford.

The proposals are being brought forward by a partnership between the club, Trafford Council, Ask Developments and Tesco, and will transform the historic venue into one of the country’s premier sporting destinations.

The plans include a Tesco store with approximately 100,000 sq ft retail sales floorspace providing over 500 jobs, half of which would be guaranteed for the local long-term unemployed.

The development will bring investment of at least £70m into parts of Trafford which suffer from low levels of economic activity and employment. It will generate an estimated 71,000 additional visitors to Old Trafford each year, creating a further £1m per year additional spend in the local economy. It will include new facilities offering a host of educational and training opportunities for the local community.
