The directors of e-architect, Adrian Welch and Isabelle Lomholt, have toured Malaysia and Singapore in the last 2 weeks, being shown much kindness by Malaysians as we visited the capital KL, the island of Penang, Kota Bahru, the Perhentian Islands, Cherating, Kuantan, Kota Tinggi, Johor Bahru and Malacca. We met up with Malaysian & Chinese developers and architects and visited key buildings. We were delighted to visit inside Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Kuala Lumpur, whilst a religious ceremony was underway, and inside the Kuantan Mosque on the east coast, a beautiful building dating from 1991.

Superb hotel at Batu Ferringhi on the north side of the island of Penang, in north west Malaysia. This 20th century building has a grand, airy interior with a beautiful relationship to the outside, first via a pool, then gardens, then the beach and finally the sea, all in close and harmonious prioximity. Design and landscaping is good quality and well-maintained.
East Coast Mosque, close to Tok Aman Bali Beach Resort, north of Koala Besut, just inside the state of Kelanatan
This religious building is clearly still under construction, but appears quite different than typical Malaysian mosque buildings.
Malacca
Malay: Melaka
According to wikipedia this historic Malaysian city region is “dubbed “The Historic State”, is the third smallest Malaysian state after Perlis and Penang. It is located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, next to the Straits of Malacca. It borders Negeri Sembilan to the north and Johor to the south. The capital is Malacca City, which is 148 kilometres (92 miles) south east of Malaysia’s capital city Kuala Lumpur, 235 kilometres (146 miles) north west of Johor’s largest city Johor Bahru, and 95 km (59 miles) north west of Johor’s second largest city, Batu Pahat. This historical city centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 7 July 2008.
Although it was the location of one of the earliest Malay sultanates, the local monarchy was abolished when the Portuguese conquered it in 1511. The head of state is the Yang di-Pertua Negeri or Governor, rather than a Sultan.”

Johor Bahru (also spelled Johor Baharu, Johor Baru, or Johore Bahru; abbreviated as JB) is the capital city of Johor in southern Malaysia, located north of Singapore. Johor Bahru is the southernmost city on the Eurasian mainland. Pasir Pelangi, the royal village, is located within Johor Bahru.
In 2010 the city had a population of 1,334,188, while the metropolitan Johor Bahru, also known as Iskandar Malaysia, had a population of 1,730,000. The city has a close relationship with Singapore, which it faces and is connected to by a bridge. The city doesn’t have much interesting architecture but the picture above shows a new building close to the massive immigration control centre.
