BAM/PFA’s new building will open on January 31, 2016.
The inaugural exhibition, Architecture of Life, includes over 200 works dating from the past 2,000 years.
The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive are a combined art museum and repertory movie theater and archive, associated with the University of California, Berkeley.
Totaling 83,000 square feet, the new BAM/PFA combines serene spaces for viewing art and film with public areas that will inspire you with their fresh, imaginative design, according to BAM/PFA.
Forward-looking and versatile, the project integrates a repurposed building—the former UC Berkeley printing plant, at the corner of Oxford and Center Streets—with a dramatic new structure. The new BAM/PFA is located at the juncture of the UC Berkeley campus and Berkeley’s downtown arts district. The building is only one block from the Downtown Berkeley BART station.
The opening exhibition, Architecture of Life, will explore the ways that architecture—as concept, metaphor, and practice—illuminates aspects of life experience. Occupying all of the gallery spaces in the new building, the exhibition will present an international selection of over two hundred works of art, architectural drawings and models, and scientific illustrations made over the past two thousand years.
During the inaugural year in the new building, international and local filmmakers, critics, special guests, and experts on film will share their love of the movies in the new BAM/PFA film theatre in the series Cinema Mon Amour.
The BAM/PFA director is Lawrence Rinder who was appointed in 2008. This cultural institution is run by the Berkeley branch of the University of California.

Opportunely located on “Museum Row” of the famed “Miracle Mile”, the building actually started out as a department store in 1962. Its new design will transform the Petersen building into one of the most significant and unforgettable structures in Los Angeles – an appropriate home for such an impressive collection of automobiles.
