Martin-in-the-Fields is the setting for one of London’s most significant recent building projects: the £36 million regeneration of the church and its associated buildings. The renewal project at St Martin’s encompasses much more than the famous church in Trafalgar Square, London. Eric Parry Architects’ response to the brief centres around connecting each of the different elements of the site.

A new glazed entrance pavilion located in the widened Church Path to the north of the church provides access to a sequence of impressive, naturally lit spaces below ground – a new foyer, a shop, a large hall, a small chapel, a new rehearsal space, various offices and meeting rooms as well as a reconfigured restaurant in the crypt. The project also houses The Connection, one of the UK’s largest charities addressing homelessness.

St Martin-in-the-Fields Church Award

Eric Parry’s renewal of St Martin’s wins AIA UK award

Eric Parry Architects was awarded an Excellence in Design Award for the renewal of St Martin-in-the-Fields by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) UK Chapter at a ceremony held on 26th March. The scheme was introduced by Peter Murray, chairman of Wordsearch and a member of this year’s awards jury, who praised “the elegant architectural solution proposed for this highly complex project.”

Peter Murray also commended St Martin’s for its “stroke of genius in choosing an architect who understands the relationship between old and new in this city”. Eric Parry, founder and principal of the practice, said: “We are delighted to receive recognition for the careful work that lies behind this project. Our aim, and that of the client, was always to return a ‘better’ St Martin’s to its community and reinstate its status as a major contribution to London’s landscape.”

St Martin-in-the-Fields Building Renewal

The public route at the heart of Eric Parry Architects’ £36m Renewal of St Martin-in-the-Fields will officially re-opens on 14th October, marking the final phase of the renewal work.

Church Path, which links Charing Cross Station and Adelaide Street to St Martin’s Place, has been substantially widened as part of the scheme and provides access to two striking architectural additions: the glass entrance to the underground spaces and a lightwell which provides natural daylight and ventilation to the underground level.

There has been a church on the site of the present St Marin-in-the-Fields since the 13th century – possibly much earlier, as evidenced by a Roman sarcophagus found during the Renewal. St Martin’s is at the heart of varied and changing communities, attracts over 700,000 visitors a year and serves an extraordinarily diverse range of people including the congregation, vulnerable and homeless people, users of the Bishop Ho Ming Wah Chinese Community Centre, concert and café goers and tourists. Reaching beyond its Anglican congregation, St Martin’s is a place in which all people of faith can meet and pray.
