Tite Street Flat
Design: London Atelier
Location: 34 Tite Street, London SW3
Historic London Residential Building
This Grade II listed flat has gone through a few mutations before its recent refurbishment by London Atelier. Once the residence of Oscar Wilde, the house had been unimaginatively divided into flats with most of its interesting and original features either hidden or removed.
The flat was stripped of non-original fabric and a new box core was inserted centrally to open up the surrounding space to more closely resemble the original layout. The central box contains services, storage and the new bathroom allowing the original walls with their 19th century features to remain free from clutter, becoming the visual focus wherever you are in the space. The elaborate original features like the skirting boards and cornices have been carefully recovered and restored and stand in contrast with the minimal detailing of the new insertions.
