A garden studio with hidden depths, that stands shoulder to shoulder with its compadre.
This garden studio has been added to the rear of the garden of our Melbury House Project. The brief was to add living quarters for staff, along with studio space for the owner. With limited garden space and a large and somewhat imposing tree, the design took the form of a two-storey structure, in order to meet the space requirements. The separate functions are divided by floor.
At garden level the studio faces the rear of the main house, skinny framed doors, rendered walls and dark grey tiles mirror that of the aforementioned house extension. The floating canopy expands full width across the garden in true modernist fashion. Emulating the streamlined form of its counterpart. Holes in the canopy allow the mature and fledgling trees to rise through. A small woodland garden inhabits the shaded area below the canopy whilst providing covered access to the garages at the rear.
The living quarters are accessed via generous lightwell carved out from a newly created basement level. An open plan living kitchen area enjoy full height glazing which openings out onto the private light well. Windows to the side allow daylight into the bedroom room and en-suite. The dark grey tiles run up the exterior walls and steps, running back to the main house, adding to the visual connectivity.
Holland Park has a strong history of providing studio spaces for artists and alike. We like to think this modern adaptation works for the era of modern media.
