Architects Astudio are designing 200 zero carbon homes as part of its role shaping the overall sustainability strategy for the new neighbourhoods of East Wick and Sweetwater at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Working on behalf of Places for People and Balfour Beatty, Astudio’s designs will cover apartments and townhouse units across three sites, with accompanying retail and community spaces at ground floor level across three separate plots.

Astudio’s designs will actively respond to the architectural character and typology of local warehouses and light industrial units around Hackney Wick, featuring large windows to maximize daylight, exposed raw materials and sloped roofs. The design team also looked to complement the materials of the permanent venues of the Olympic Park, such as the Copper Box Arena, as well as the Kings Yard Energy Centre.
Working closely with KHL Sustainability, Astudio has been responsible for actively modelling typical units, challenging the orientation of blocks and in doing so maximizing daylight to flats and internal courtyards.
The development of the new neighbourhoods of East Wick and Sweetwater is being undertaken by a Balfour Beatty and Places for People joint venture. Astudio was appointed alongside a team of architectural practices, including Studio Egret West, Sheppard Robson, ShedKM, Piercy & Co, ABA and Fabrik with the JV also supported by Urban Splash.

Astudio’s remit could be further expanded to include the designing of a mixed used healthcare and residential building at the heart of the area’s masterplan.
Max Rengifo, Director of Astudio said: “We are fascinated by the relationship between the local scale of the buildings in Hackney Wick and their industrial use and character. Our designs will reflect this interplay, whilst embracing the vibrancy of the area’s independent traders, art studios, bars and restaurants.
“From the very outset this has been a hugely collaborative project, as we have worked closely and successfully with the other architectural practices involved. We look forward to continuing to work with all the partners and local stakeholders involved to help create one of the most dynamic sustainable communities in Europe.”
The sites are located within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and are part of the London Legacy Development Corporation plans for the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The development is planned to be completed by 2023 and will provide housing, community spaces, shops, offices and extensive public realm. The first homes will be available from the end of 2017.

Sweetwater will provide up to 650 new homes and is located in the south-west of the Park near Old Ford and the Copper Box Arena. It includes studios, apartments and family homes with private gardens, a new primary school, two new nurseries and a health centre.
