About the project
Dunraven School has pioneered the use of recycled sea containers to create a new school and community facility.
The Dunraven School building, the first such in the world, includes a full-height sports hall, a gym space and first floor viewing galleries on three sides. The sea containers define both the external structure of the building, with their familiar corrugated steel sides, and the internal spaces such as changing rooms.
Generous windows, echoing greenhouse glazing, allow glimpses of sporting activities and bring in plenty of natural light. The north elevation is carefully composed from polycarbonate panels and clear glazing, resulting in interesting effects at night.
The containers were modified off site. Internal and external openings were created, and colour coating, insulation, services and internal decorations added. The on-site assembly took just three days, causing minimal disruption to school life and the fit-out only took a further two months.
The sports hall is attached to the school’s rainwater harvesting facility and is built upon re-usable steel screw piles. A BREEAM ‘very good’ rating confirmed its sustainability credentials.
Judges’ comment
“The use of adapted sea containers has given Dunraven School an extremely cheap new facility built with remarkable speed – and it looks good.”
