Camden Highline Crowdfunding Campaign Beats Target
CAMDEN HIGHLINE SMASHES CROWDFUNDING TARGET
£64K RAISED WILL KICK-START THE PROJECT AND HELP SET UP HIGHLINE COMMUNITY ORGANISATION
LONDON – A crowdfunding campaign for the Camden Highline has raised £64k, almost double its initial target a month after beginning.
The campaign benefitted from a wave of support including the Mayor of London Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan and Camden Market, who joined over 300 residents, community groups and businesses who donated to the campaign.
The project, a rival to New York’s iconic High Line, would link the world-famous Camden Market with the recently redeveloped King’s Cross area by transforming an 0.8km disused railway line in Camden into a new public park and garden walk.
The money raised will be used for feasibility work to establish key details, including the condition of the existing infrastructure, the resources required for transforming the disused railway, and timelines to completion.
As well as the feasibility work the crowdfunding campaign will help pay to set up a new community organisation that will deliver the Camden Highline, and events and workshops that will guide the project’s aims and ambitions.
London Design Festival
People can find out more about the Camden Highline during London Design Festival 16-24 September 2017. The Camden Highline will be carrying out an exhibition showing off the proposed route and running a series of events, workshops and walking tours.
Simon Pitkeathley, Chief Executive, Camden Town Unlimited, said:
“This is a small but very significant step towards construction. We want to thank everyone who has donated to the campaign, from the Mayor to businesses, residents and community groups – we couldn’t have done this without you! Your support has been incredible and means we can begin the next stage of work with the best possible chance to turn this idea into a reality!”

Local business group Camden Town Unlimited recently launched the crowdfunding campaign to raise £40,000 for a feasibility study into the proposals.
Over 90% of the target funding has been raised one month into the campaign, with the Mayor and Camden Market making donations, as announced at City Hall.
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, said:
“This innovative project has the potential to become a real asset for Camden and is a great example of a local community taking an idea and garnering support in order to make it a reality. I look forward to seeing it develop.”
Georgia Gould, Leader of Camden Council, said:
“The Camden Highline is a really exciting proposal, which is capturing public imagination and would contribute to the Council’s ambition to further improve links between Camden Town, Camley Street and Kings Cross. It’s great to see the crowdfunding figure rising daily and the Council is ready to work with those behind the project as it moves forward.”
Martin Sagar, Chair, Camden Town Unlimited, and Partner, Sheppard Robson, said:
“On behalf of the business community in Camden we are thrilled to receive this backing from the Mayor. It’s brilliant that so many others see the transformative potential of this project and the huge benefits it will bring for future generations.”
Mark Alper, Development Director, Camden Market, said:
“The Highline will bridge the gap between two of London’s most vibrant areas –Camden Market and Granary Square in King’s Cross – and it will be an attraction in its own right. Let’s get it built and make two fantastic places even better.”
Wayne Hemingway MBE, Hemingway Design, said:
“Taking an existing piece of London’s infrastructure and bringing it back to life by linking two very different but complimentary places, Camden and King’s Cross, is a fantastic idea.”
Camden High Line Road Bridge design:
David Partridge, Managing Partner, Argent, Said:
“Everything that we have done at King’s Cross has been about opening up forgotten pieces of the city to become open and accessible to all. The new Camden Highline will carry on this work, bringing life back to a neglected heritage asset.”
Camden High Line Gardens design:
Caroline Hill, Chair, Kentish Town Road Action
“Kentish Town Road Action supports this amazing visionary project and sees it as a positive benefit to the local community.”
Roger Winfield, Chair, Kentish Town Neighbourhood Forum, said:
“By creating a new and safe green route for pedestrians and cyclists, it will also create new public realm, improving the health and quality of life for local people which is badly needed.”

Camden Highline Route
About the Camden Highline Route
The 8 metre high, 18 metre wide, disused railway line crosses 8 roads on 7 existing bridges and was originally built as part of the North London Railway, now the North London Line, which is part of the London Overground network.
The western end of the proposed route begins on the north side of the North London Line above Kentish Town Road. The proposed route then travels eastwards, to the north of Camden Road station (the section with the largest width), towards Caledonian Road & Barnsbury station, over several intact but disused railway bridges, and finishes by Camley Street, which leads into King’s Cross.
