Buckley Building Clerkenwell
Work on the Buckley Building starts onsite
Work has begun on Buckley Gray Yeoman’s £15 million refurbishment and extension of an outdated office building in the heart Clerkenwell, London. Derwent London, the developer of the building, has renamed the project ‘The Buckley Building’ in memory of the late Richard Buckley, one of the founding partners of Buckley Gray Yeoman.
Matt Yeoman from Buckley Gray Yeoman said: “To have Derwent London name their new building in Richard’s memory is a fantastic gesture. Richard’s family is delighted, as am I and everyone at the practice”.
The practice’s transformation of the building, which will provide 85,000 sq ft of modern office space over four floors, has been designed to reflect the vibrant surrounding area and preserve the building’s industrial character.
Buckley Gray Yeoman’s design will upgrade the existing office accommodation by creating highquality, open working environments. The design includes infilling the existing atrium space to maximise the floor plan of the development, creating spaces that can be adapted to suit a number of different options for tenants.
Surrounded on all four sides by public highways the building is on an ‘island’ block giving it a strong presence. To emphasise the building’s entrance, Buckley Gray Yeoman’s design will move the main doorway to the southern corner of the building, creating clear links with the adjacent public space, Clerkenwell Green.
Again referencing the industrial past of the area, the new lobby space of the Buckley Building will feature a minimal palette of two concrete tones and a black steel feature wall. At the back of the lobby a staircase inspired by Italian architect Carlo Scarpa will sit next to an ‘art wall’ that will conceal an automated door to access the disabled lift.
The scheme is due to complete later this year.
