Carnikava Forest House, Latvia
This small private house, located in a scenic area about 30 km from Riga, sits near the Gulf of Riga at the edge of a lush forest. The house and garage are positioned separately on the site, following the footprints of pre-existing foundations. A wooden terrace connects the two buildings, blending them seamlessly with the surrounding natural environment.
Functionally, the house is divided into two distinct areas: the main living space and the guest quarters. The connection between these zones is made through an indoor passageway that provides stunning visual continuity between the courtyard and the forest, allowing the natural landscape to flow into the living space. The exterior finishes, including the terrace, are made from Latvian granary board treated with a hydrophobic compound, ensuring durability. The roof and facades are covered with anthracite-colored standing seam roof panels, giving the home a modern yet subtle aesthetic.
On the guest side, a small roof overhang shelters a mini-terrace, ideal for storing firewood for the wood stove in the living room. The terrace outside the master bedroom also features an outdoor shower, further enhancing the connection to nature.
The interior is minimalist and understated, with simple finishes and a focus on ecological materials. The design emphasizes a harmonious connection between the forest and the indoor living spaces, which is the central concept of the project. The heart of the home is the kitchen-living room, featuring a dramatic five-meter-high ceiling and a dark plywood “box” housing essential technical rooms such as the laundry, boiler room, guest bathroom, and entrance hall. In contrast, other rooms have suspended ceilings that conceal the house’s mechanical systems like air conditioning and ventilation.
The guest area, separated by a covered passage, includes a bedroom with a spacious bathroom featuring a small sauna and shower, offering a serene retreat.
