Restoration of a house in the Historical Center of Montesardo, hamlet of Alessano, province of Lecce, Italy.
Via Chiesa 5 in Montesardo was selected from the American tv program “Extreme Homes”.
The original structure of the building, dated around the first half of sixteenth century, has been completely respected.
The meaning of the project was to valorize the existing spaces, making them more functional to the modern living use.
Ground level:
There is a small barrel vaulted entrance hall, a laundry, a small toilette, a kitchen and living-dining. The kitchen, completely transformed, is now the “connecting hub” between entrance hall and living: a light glass and stained steel structure puts in constant dialogue indoor and outdoor, antique and modern. The living-dining, which was the old stable, is still a simple open space, but has now all modern comforts and a built-in bench with a handcrafted colored patchwork of pillows (that can be used as a guests’ bed, if needed), designed by our client.
Outside:
from the small court, going up the first staircase, there is the first level terrace that is furnished with a built-in sofa, realized with the stone blocks that originally formed the old outside latrine.
From here, another staircase, that gives completely different prospective views of the house, brings to the second level terrace, where is the access to the master bedroom and connected bathroom.
Upper level:
in both master bedroom and bathroom have been preserved the old tiles of the floor. The master bathroom, designed as a relax area, has a big built-in tub, shaped as the bow of the traditional boats. Next to the tub and in the middle of the bathroom there is a party wall, shaped as the parapet of the outer staircase. It divides the basin area from the toilette and wet area, but also has the function to contain the exhaust system, which allowed the preservation of the old flooring. The bathroom ceiling is covered by the fantastic star shaped vault.
The project is the result of a perfect match between client, architects and local master craftsmen with the right knowledge, passion and enthusiasm.
