Chalet La Pedevilla Residence in Tyrol

DESIGN NAME:
Chalet La Pedevilla

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residence & Chalet

INSPIRATION:
Hamlets, also called viles in the regional dialect, are small urban settlements, a unique cultural & architectural tradition which evolved throughout the centuries. Most farms in this hamlet appear to be a pair style type, consisting of a tenement and a farm house. In this respect the two new buildings make no exception. Regional characteristics, like the gable roof, loggias and the common timber facade were incorporated into the design, yet portrayed deliberately in a independent rendition.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The buildings are unique in themselves. The whole structural element, which reaches from the base to the roof, was cast in exposed conctrete with aggregates of dolomite rock. Applied types of timber, mainly larch and pine, are of regional origin. The outer timber shell with its inbound loggias has been kept consistently in black, a convincing counterpart to the interior, where white concrete walls and ceilings are complementing natural & hand-hewn solid timber flooring, windows, and furniture.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The buildings are self contained, which means that they can operate inependently over a long period of time. This charasteristic can be found in all of the hamlets in this region, and was therefore taken as role model. The site has not only its own water source, the buildings even ensure their energetic independency by taking advantage in the usage of geothermal and solar energy.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Sustainable and regional Materials, Kitchen is the center of the house, Self-Sufficient building technology, compact outer shell, reduction on a minimum of materials, all regional materials, refining craftmanship, high-standard architectur, traditional role models, refine social and ecological life, regarding historical, traditional and regional background

CHALLENGE:
Hardest part at the research phase was to generate a unique design quality. The pair type house of the hamlet was taken as role model, the whole layout design had to be aligned to it. Therefore the idol of the farm was refined into a modern residence, while the stable became the chalet. Hardest part at the construction phase was to generate a unique material quality. The complete interior walls and ceilings are of exposed concrete quality, all fixtures were attached before the moulding process.
