RIBA Awards 2012 Citation:
This is a civic building with a public face and a clear and direct internal organisation that relays the narrative of the past and the security in which it is being preserved for the future. The records are held within a concrete citadel that is wrapped by well day-lit spaces containing the reading rooms and circulation.
The repository of history is clearly but unobtrusively organised in its functions of collection, preservation, storage and access. The abundance of natural light and the calm, polished feel of the interior lend it an inviting yet hushed air. Some buildings contain art, others incorporate art.
PRONI’s ambitious new building integrates art both externally and internally in a quiet way that serves the building’s function as a repository of memories. Not only is the building emphatically sustainable environmentally but it also treats this approach as a given by prioritising the quality of use, space and light. It suggests that the days of conflict between architectural quality and environmental sustainability are well behind us.
