Southwest Acute Hospital wins Best Inpatient Facility at Building Better Healthcare Awards 2013
Western Trust’s Southwest Acute Hospital picked up another top design award at this year’s Building Better Healthcare Awards – winner of Best Inpatient Facility in the Building Design class. The winners were announced at a awards event at The Brewery on 6 November 2013. The Building Better Healthcare Awards is an annual event to recognise innovation and improvement in the built environment and people working in the healthcare industry. The event was hosted by guest speaker, Michael Portillo.
Southwest Acute Hospital was designed by international design firm, Stantec, for the Northern Ireland Health Group (NIHG). The hospital is run by the Western Trust and first opened its doors to patients on 21 June 2012.
“The facility is state-of-the-art and one in which our dedicated staff can deliver patient care to all those who need it in a friendly and open environment,” said Mr Joe Lusby, deputy chief director of the Western Trust and key organisational leader during the facility’s opening.
The Southwest Acute Hospital is a new 300-bed acute hospital with designated centres for women and children. The hospital is located north of Enniskillen in the County Fermanagh countryside with views of nearby Wolfe Lough. It is Northern Ireland’s first hospital with 100 per cent single patient bedrooms.
Distinctive Design Approaches, Perspectives for the Community
Southwest Acute Hospital has been designed to provide an environmentally-sensitive and sustainable solution. The facility incorporates sustainable features and technologies including, renewable energy, passive H&V features and site sensitive design. Stantec worked closely with landscape architect, LUC, to create a fully-integrated and sustainable landscape for the hospital. The following are perspectives from key members of Stantec’s architectural design team:
Jonathan Wilson, UK healthcare sector leader: “We are delighted that Southwest Acute Hospital has won this prestigious award. The project has been a labour of love for the team who designed and delivered it, but perhaps more importantly a significant milestone in the advancement of hospital design in the UK. Over the last decade we have been working to simplify the design solution at the same time as taking on board ever more complex requirements – clinical performance, sustainable design, and patient environment. This hospital achieves all of this with a simplicity and elegance of design concept, and sits harmoniously within the site and the beautiful County Fermanagh landscape. This amazing outcome would not have been possible without a concerted team effort – client, contractor and designers – to which we are proud to have contributed.”

Southwest Acute Hospital, Enniskillen
• New Southwest Acute Hospital in Enniskillen nominated for 3 international construction awards
• Spain’s FCC built the £276 million hospital on time and within budget
• Hospital was inaugurated in June 2012 by HM Queen Elizabeth
London/Madrid: 25th June 2013. FCC, the Spanish infrastructure and environmental services company, was honoured last night with a Silver Green Apple Awards for Built Environment and Architectural Heritage for their first UK project – the Southwest Acute Hospital in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. The news comes a week after FCC was named preferred bidder for the £600 million Mersey Gateway Bridge project.
The Green Apple Awards follow previous recognition at theEngineering News Record Global Best Project Awards in New York where FCC were presented with an Award of Merit for the hospital. The project was also shortlisted for Best Designed Project and Best Operational Project at the May PPP Bulletin Awards in London.
The Enniskillen hospital represents the first Public–Private Partnership in Northern Ireland, and is also the first single bed hospital to be constructed in the UK. It has the facility to house employees and an energy demand management centre, making it one of the most modern hospitals in Europe in terms of energy efficiency. FCC completed the project on time and within budget in May 2012. The hospital was opened by HM the Queen in June 2012.
The Green Apple awards are presented annually in recognition of building projects that enhance the built environment or protect our architectural heritage. FCC competed against more than 200 other nominations for the Green Apple Environment Award in the national campaign to find Britain’s greenest companies, councils and communities. The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 and have become established as the country’s major recognition for environmental endeavour among companies, councils, communities and countries. Previous winners include the United Nations, BBC, Balfour Beatty, Carillion, Lafarge, Cemex and Jaguar.

Rafael Foulquie, Managing Director of FCC Construccion UK and Ireland said: “We are delighted that our first UK project has been chosen as an example of best practice in healthcare construction. Healthcare is a very specialised area of construction that FCC has years of experience in delivering around the world. FCC are committed to expanding their global operations in the UK and this Green Apple Award is very encouraging indeed.”
The Southwest Acute Hospital
The facility offers the most modern clinical practices and the latest technologies in patient care. The New Southwest Acute Hospital also offers a wide range of specialties, with a focus on maternity and emergency services, and will complement those offered by Erne Hospital, also in Enniskillen.
The hospital is laid out in three bands or lines of blocks, separated by linear gardens or patios, allowing for optimum use of natural lighting and ventilation as well as providing a constant view of the surroundings.
Extensive experience in hospital construction
FCC is responsible for the construction of many health facilities around the world. The group is currently building a 440 million euro hospital complex in Panama which is set to be the largest in Central America, spanning 183,912 square metres. It is also building the €100 million Luis Chicho Fábrega hospital in Panama (Veraguas Province).
FCC has a 175 million euro contract for the construction and refurbishment of the Weinviertel Clinic (Austria), and it is building a hospital in Abu Dhabi for the UAE health authority.
In Spain, the company has also built a large number of hospitals and health service buildings such as the Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid, O’Donnell maternity hospital in Madrid and the new Hospital de Mataró in Barcelona. It has also built a state-of-the art biomedical centre in Barcelona – the Centro Esther Koplowitz. FCC is currently building the hospital in La Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz).
FCC’s experience in public –private partnerships for hospitals
FCC has a wealth of experience in public-private health-related projects, such as Madrid’s Hospital de Torrejón de Ardoz opened in 2011 and Hospital del Sureste in Arganda del Rey opened in 2007. Both were full-service projects including construction, equipment and 30 years’ operation.
FCC building health centres worth over 600 million euros’ globally.
