Natra Bintan Resort, Indonesia
Welcome to glamping in the tropics. Inspired by 18th century colonial exploration camps, Natra Bintan brings a rugged outback experience for the adventurous traveler. Safari tents coupled with modern tropical sheds are infused with local textures. Guest are offered a rustic tropical experience coupled with the comforts of a modern resort.
What started as a 40-key interim development is now a 100-key flagship resort re-branded under Tribute Portfolio and the highlight of Treasure Bay Bintan, the integrated resort development where Natra Bintan is situated at.
The project was planned as a series of tents and shed-like cantilevered roof forms. The front-of-house block was designed such that guests arriving from the access road have an obscured view, until they step into the open Arrival Hall – and are greeted by a stunning view across the length of Crystal Lagoon. Flanking the hall are the Reception and All-day Dining (The Patio), both overlooking the lagoon. Guest can lounge at the sand pit or the bar while enjoying the full glory of the lagoon with a direct sunset view.
The construction of the front-of-house was stripped to basic elements – steel columns, off-form concrete slabs, polycarbonate roof and local fairfaced brick walls. Guest are given a first impression of the local context: The interior walls and ceiling were finished with reclaimed hardwood from the kampung (village) and riang riang (local hardwood branches), with emerald-coloured sukabi tiles and strip lightings offering some accent.
Suspended rattan baskets sourced locally doubles as lighting reflectors in The Patio’s indoor areas. Jute ropes clad the columns and the ceiling of The Patio’s alfresco area, reminiscent of Bintan’s fishing culture.
Lagoon-front tents are maximized by staggering the layout. The remaining tents are then clustered in groups with a central communal garden, which makes it conducive for larger groups to congregate.
The prefabricated safari tents were produced in collaboration with a reputable South African, with triple-layered roof to enhance insulation from the tropical heat. The in-situ bathrooms on the other hand was constructed using local bricks, stone, polycarbonate and screened with riang riang.
While air-conditioning is provided in the All-day Dining and tents based on the operator’s consideration for guest comfort, all other areas are naturally cross ventilated allowing guests to enjoy the best of the tropics.
Natra Bintan’s unique character is befitting Tribute Portfolio’s collection of indie hotels, while maintaining the standard amenities and service quality that Marriott is known for.
