House O
This 3 bedroom home for a musician-composer, holds a 150 sqm loft space as it’s 2nd floor, overlooking its lush surrounding of green rice paddies and coconut trees.
The minimal shell of the house amplifies the panoramic experience of its surrounding landscape.
The design emerged from a desire to translate the construct of a single sound wave into an overarching architectural gesture that will define the interior and exterior spatial qualities of the house.
Through an iterative process of manipulating the curve of single a line, both in plan and elevation, begins to articulate a multi-planar space in which the ground plane and roof scape are directly intertwined.
‘As feeling like being inside of an instrument’ most inside surfaces are rendered as wood patterned surfaces. The
ceiling drops down in equal manner to improve acoustics and to indicate the entrance as a gesture.
This element adds to the sculpted, interior experience of the space that is free of structural excess. Throughout several months of the year, House O operates as a ‘Artist-in-residence’ initiative, hosting selected artists from across the world for short periods of artistic retreat.
About Alexis Dornier
The philosophy behind Alexis Dornier’s architecture is to combine and reformulate design methods for each
architectural design task. An (architectural) task is its own case, its own matter, problem and affair. A set of rules
forms a logical, explanatory and comprehensive design narrative that leads to efficiency and a strong expression of
our built environments.
Dornier’s architectural projects endeavour to formulate a design aesthetic that mediates
between elements of Tropical Modernism and Industrial Architecture with an underlying ambition for formal and
tectonic innovation. This design aesthetic is realised through an iterative design process and careful selection of
locally available natural materials, spatially composed to respond to the site and natural setting in which they are
placed
Alexis Dornier was born in Germany in 1981, where he grew up under the constant influence of the aviation industry.
After exploring the field of PR and advertising, Dornier studied architecture at the Berlin University of the Arts and
KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, after which he relocated to New York City to work as an
architectural designer for Asymptote Architecture, OMA-NY and Rex in between 2004-2007. Between 2007-2013,
Dornier shifted his focus to cross disciplinary design, working on projects ranging from merchandising to
industrial, product and interior design. In 2009 he became the creative director of MADE – art gallery in Berlin
collaborating with prominent international artists and musicians.
2013 marked a radical shift in Dornier’s life and career, when he decided to leave his Berlin life behind and relocate
to Ubud Bali where he began consulting on locally designed and built architectural projects. What began as
architectural consultancy quickly evolved into wholistic, independent project designs of his own, with a rapidly
growing body of work across the Balinese landscape. Dornier is now based in Ubud, working both locally and
internationally on a mixture of residential and commercial projects.
