From Norway To Balaton House, Hungary
The residential building is home to a four-member family that moved from Norway to the Balaton Uplands, Hungary. The design principles focus on the ‘genius loci’ and a contemporary architectural approach. The building is organized into a traditional T-shaped mass with a gable roof and an open truss above the main living spaces. An important aspect of the design was to protect the family’s privacy while integrating visual and functional connections between the interior spaces and the surrounding landscape.
Therefore, the rear garden façades open toward nature through a porch system and transitional covered–open spaces. These transitional spaces along the south and southwest façades provide climate control and create comfortable, livable outdoor-covered areas for the family. The façades facing the street and the front garden are designed to preserve privacy
Upon entering the main entrance, a small internal garden welcomes you and directs your gaze toward the larger garden area (see: Ground Floor Plan). The foyer separates the private rooms from the public spaces. The kitchen, dining, and living areas form a continuous open space, complemented by a covered-open porch system. This continuous porch system is a key element of the design. The transitional spaces along the south and southwest façades, including a recessed building volume and a concrete porch roof supported by stone and wooden columns, provide shading and create a protected, livable zone between the garden and the building.
The spaces, designed through the reinterpretation of traditional architectural elements, are conceived as an extension of the local heritage. The building strives for a harmonious coexistence with both its environment and its users
