Laboratory Building in Groningen
The construction of the Laboratory is a start of the redevelopment at the MartiniPoint in Groningen. This laboratory with over 200 employees, is the largest of its kind in the Netherlands and does research in the field of virology and immunology. The specialist work and very strict work protocols require a specific design and layout of the building. Efficiency and precise protocols are crucial for the functioning of the lab, while the appearance is decisive as a prelude to the restructuring of the area.
From the start of the design process has in cooperation with the client and builder been looked for the best solution to meet the strict requirements of the functions in the building (4400m2). The different features in the plans, cross sections and materials used are clearly legible and recognizable from each other. The ground floor is a large area occupied by cold storage and other facilities for the research needed.
The floors above have a clear division between the laboratory spaces on the north side with little sunlight and the lighter offices on the south side. Besides the laboratory research it is important to exchange knowledge between employees. Around the central atrium the collective functions have been clustered. The floor height varies which increases the contact between the floors in the vide and promotes encounters.
Research material is being delivered, examined and stored in the building. The trajectory of a research tissue for virological examination is clearly reflected in the structure, shape and material of the interior and exterior. The particular facade also is an image of the schematic form of a virus. By using properly the design expertise, construction knowledge and use experience it has been possible to realize within a budget of an average office building an office.
