Herman Miller Announces Select Edition 2012
Eames LTR, for limited time, in Ray Eames colors
Starting in October, Herman Miller will offer a special limited run interpretation of its classic Eames Wire Base Low Tables (Eames LTR) in three colors that pay homage to Ray Eames on the 100th anniversary of her birth. Although it is difficult to distinguish the individual contributions of a creative duo such as Charles and Ray Eames, Ray clearly brought a gift for color.
Herman Miller has chosen three bold colors for this years Select Edition program that were Ray’s favorites and used on the exterior panels of Case Study House #8, which she and Charles designed. The tables will be sold through the Spring of 2013, and then cease to be produced, giving these tables added appeal to collectors.
These diminutive tables would also make a wonderful holiday gifts. Standing 10 in. high, they were originally used by the Eameses for traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. Today, they stand on their own, next to beds or chairs as an accompanying surface, or on top of each other.
Please note the Eames LTR tables will only be available in the US and are not being shipped out to other countries.
Herman Miller Select Program Announces 2012 Edition – Further Information
Eames LTR Tables in Ray Eames Colors available for a short time
Herman Miller, the pioneering American furniture maker with a record of design innovations that have helped define modern residential and commercial interiors, has announced their 2012 Select Program offering—three special edition colors of the Eames Wire Base Low Table, often referred to as the Eames LTR table, drawn from the company’s Herman Miller Collection offering.
The annual Select Program, which began in 2008, provides customers with a unique way to enrich their connection to the company’s long history of iconic designs and their designers. These colorful Eames LTR tables will only be available through the Spring of 2013, when the company will cease production, giving added appeal to collectors and others interested in classic modern American design.
Although it is difficult to distinguish the individual contributions of a creative duo such as Charles and Ray Eames, Ray clearly brought a gift for color, extant from childhood and honed under the tutelage of abstract expressionist Hans Hoffman. To honor the 100th year of her birth, Herman Miller has chosen three bold colors (cobalt blue, red-orange, and yellow gold) which were Ray’s favorites and used on the exterior panels of the Case Study House #8, which she and Charles designed. The tables will go on sale in mid October with a retail price of $294.
Each year, Herman Miller chooses a design for this program from decommissioned archives, reinterpreted classics or a new object d’art. Previous Select Editions have included (2011) the George Nelson-designed Tray Table from 1961, with a special sunburst inlaid top inspired by his 1955 clock called “Flock of Butterflies”; (2010) a walnut and black version of the Eames Hang-It-All; (2009) A series of Tops inspired by Eames’ love of toys and their famous film, ‘Tops,’ and the first Select Program design (2008), a cowhide-upholstered version of the Eames molded plywood LCW chair.
The Eames Wire Base Low Tables, first introduced in 1950, are both practical and beautiful. They are veneered in ash, treated with a rich aniline stain and have a correspondingly colored wire base in durable powder coat.
Having developed innovative ways to mold plywood, Charles began to take note of the “fantastic things being made of wire” which led to experimentation with metal wire rods and wire mesh, eventually leading to the development of a technique for mass production of welded wire rods. This table, which stands 10 in. high, was used by the Eameses to conduct “chanoyu”, the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, for special guests that included sculptor, Isamu Noguchi and film pioneer, Charlie Chaplin. Today, these diminutive tables stand on their own, next to beds and chairs as an accompanying surface or on top of each other in a convenient stack.
About The Herman Miller Collection
In 1948, George Nelson created the first Herman Miller Collection, with the goal of “a permanent collection designed to meet fully the requirements for modern living.” He understood that the Collection would evolve as human behavior changed and new materials and manufacturing technologies emerged.
Today’s modern living embraces the blending of life and work, with greater appreciation for contemporary design and mobile and ubiquitous technologies offering new freedom of choice in where and how people express their lifestyles and pursue their professions. The Herman Miller Collection welcomes and enriches this new era, as we endeavor to realize Nelson’s vision for the modern home, office, and public spaces.
