Sketches for the future – Werner Sobek and the ILEK
Exhibition and panel discussion at the Moscow Architecture Biennale 2010
The Goethe-Institut Moscow, the Werner Sobek office and the ILEK (Institute for Lightweight Design and Construction at the University of Stuttgart) are showing the exhibition “Sketches for the Future: Werner Sobek and the ILEK” as part of the Moscow Architecture Biennale 2010. The exhibition is dedicated to the interface between architecture and construction, which is increasingly coming to the fore in architectural design.
With his diverse activities, Werner Sobek is one of the most important protagonists in this field internationally. As a “researching, designing and constructing engineer” Werner Sobek – in collaboration with well-known architects – appeared in the creation of often spectacular concepts as well as an architect with independent projects and well-regarded buildings. He teaches as head of the ILEK in Stuttgart and is Mies van der Rohe professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.
The exhibition presents numerous photos, plans, research objects as well as a number of unusual research objects from the ILEK in Stuttgart as well as models of realized buildings from the Werner Sobek office. The work is divided into four large thematic blocks: “Transmission Adaptivity” – “Material Creativity” – “Production Optimization” – “System Minimization”. The exhibition outlines the current state of civil engineering in practice, teaching and research through didactically prepared and visualized topics.
The opening ceremony of the exhibition will take place on Wednesday, May 26th, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. At the end of the exhibition, Werner Sobek and the Russian architect Sergei Tchoban will speak on June 8, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the large auditorium of the Polytechnic Museum on the question “How will we live in the future?”. This panel discussion marks the start of the large-scale series of discussions “The Present of the Future”, which will bring together a high-ranking German and a Russian representative for a discussion on specific questions of the future.
Werner Sobek stands for engineering, design and sustainability worldwide. His group of companies has branches in Stuttgart, Dubai, Frankfurt, Cairo, Moscow and New York. The work of the office is characterized by high-class design based on outstanding engineering and sophisticated concepts to minimize energy and material consumption. The company, founded in 1992 with more than 200 employees, processes all types of structures and materials. The main focus is on lightweight construction, high-rise construction, facade planning, special constructions in steel, glass, titanium, fabric and wood as well as the planning of sustainable buildings.
The Institute for Lightweight Design and Design (ILEK) at the University of Stuttgart, headed by Werner Sobek, combines research and teaching into the areas of design and design that are dominant in architecture with the areas of analysis and construction as well as materials science that are at the heart of civil engineering. On the basis of a goal-oriented and interdisciplinary approach, the institute deals with the conceptual and cross-material development of all types of construction methods and supporting structures. The range of work areas spans from building with textiles and glass to new structures in reinforced and prestressed concrete. From the individual detail to the entire structure, it is about the optimization of form and construction with regard to material and energy consumption, durability and reliability, recyclability and environmental compatibility.
