“Richard Meier & Frank Stella: Space & Form”
December 5, 2017, to March 4, 2018
at the Meier Gallery at the Surf Club, Surfside, Florida, USA
Miami, December 8, 2017 —Richard Meier and Frank Stella: Space and Form is an intimate installation of photographs, drawings, collages, a sculpture and an architectural model that traces the relationship between the architect and the artist through their careers. The earliest documentation is related to a competition for a fountain design on which Meier and Stella collaborated in 1963.
In addition to occasionally working together professionally, their friendship was also expressed in other ways: Stella and his family lived in a loft designed by Richard Meier, Meier began collecting Stella’s work and gave it pride of place in his homes, offices, and studio. By the 1990’s, Meier had begun to receive major commissions for museums and other projects.
Stella was the architect’s choice to provide a sculptural counterpoint to his rigorously modern architecture. Photo documentation of their working alongside each other on the Federal Courthouse in Phoenix, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, the Weishaupt Forum in Germany and the Jubilee Church in Rome, amongst others, reveals not only their individual accomplishments but the unique symbiosis between them.
Richard Meier and Frank Stella: Space and Form is curated by Terence Riley, architect and former director of the Perez Art Museum Miami, and is on view in the Meier Gallery from December 5, 2017, to March 4, 2018.
This exhibition is the second in a series of ongoing exhibitions that were conceived by Nadim Ashi as part of his overall vision for integrating the arts, architecture and the landscape at the Surf Club.
Richard Meier is the architect of the Surf Club. A winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1984, Meier has designed iconic buildings throughout the United States and Europe, including the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and the Arp Museum in Germany.
Frank Stella has been amongst the most influential American painters and sculptors since his early paintings were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art when he was just 20 years old. He currently has an exhibition of his work at the NSU Art Museum, Fort Lauderdale in Florida.
