Designing for the arts
July 13 -October 14, 2016
Location: Abetenim Arts Village, Abetenim, Ashanti Region of Ghana
Participation fee: 300€
Accommodation: 70€/week
Food: 70€/week
Personal expenses, airfare, visa and vaccination are on your behalf
The minimum participation is 2 weeks

Information from the organisers:
Why: Join our international team to build a sustainable prototype and help to reinvent the traditional earth house within an arts village. You will learn new skills on earth building and immerse in the local culture through hands-on site analysis, filed trips and the construction of the projects with the local community
Who: anybody interested in building with earth, volunteers, students of architecture and landscape, interior designers to organize the interior spaces, product designers to create the furniture, photographers/video makers for a documentary. Students can use the opportunity for internship, personal research or thesis.

Workshop Program:
1. Preliminary Studio
Preliminary earth tests; visit to the surrounding areas to study the local context; photo and video report of the village consitions. Duration 2 weeks. Available places: 5
2. Foundations
Realization of foundations in stone and concrete; photo and video report; visit to Kumasi. Duration 2 weeks. Available places: 5
3. Walls construction
Use of the rammed earth technique; experimentation of other techniques; photo and video report; visit to Kumasi market. Duration 6 weeks. Available places: 15
4. Roofing
Realization of the wood structure; realization of the corrugate metal sheet cover; photo and video report; visit to Asante traditional buildings UNESCO. Duration 2 weeks. Available places: 5
5. Interior design and landscaping
Organization of the interior spaces; connection of the structure with the local context; photo and video report; visit to Kumasi. Duration 2 weeks. Available places 5.
The time for the realization of the different steps is approximate. It will depend on the weather conditions, the material availability and the relation with local workers. Every week we will talk about the project design to study specific solution and refinements related with local the community needs and ideas. During every sessions we will organize filed trips to discover the Ghana culture and we will arrange specific seminars with local experts in order to understand the local construction methods and share our knowledge with them.
