The Bartlett, UCL’s world-renowned multidisciplinary faculty of the Built Environment, will celebrate the centenary of The Bartlett name in 2019 with a year-long programme of events and a new website that reveals a new story every day for 100 days, exploring the past, present and future of The Bartlett.
Bartlett 100 will celebrate the people and projects that have shaped The Bartlett and the world around it, the moments that have made the institution, and how its research continues to contribute to the way that we design, model, build and govern human spaces.

2019 marks 100 years since Sir Herbert Henry Bartlett, a civil engineer and building contractor, consented to the department being renamed in his honour at UCL after he founded chairs in the School of Architecture and the School of Planning. Today, The Bartlett is a globally-active faculty that brings together 12 Schools and Institutes that train new professionals for careers in the built environment, studies the global impact of their activity and sets the agenda for the future development of the sector.

Professor Alan Penn, Dean of The Bartlett, said:
“Bartlett 100 will use 2019 to explore the radical thinking and projects that have characterised The Bartlett for a century. However, our intention is not to dwell too long on where we have come from, but to map out where we might go. To solve the problems of the 21st century, we need to be able to imagine radical new futures.

“This is not your typical review of past achievements. Through articles, essays, photo stories, interviews and archive materials, as well as events across 2019, over 100 days, our aim is to give you an insight into how our unique ecology has allowed us to adapt and grow around research questions, to embrace uncertainty rather than recoil from it to help build a better future for us all.”

Since 1919, The Bartlett has grown to be one of the most highly-regarded centres for the study of the built environment in the world. The work of the faculty has expanded to cover all categories of human space: physical structures like homes, building and cities as well as the invisible structures that govern them, the political and legal systems, financial frameworks and social norms. By combining design, history and theory across subject areas, The Bartlett is working to understand the structures shaping society today – and to make the world fairer and more prosperous.

March 2019

EXHIBITION: TRIBAL GATHERING

First year Engineering and Architectural Design MEng students will design, build and live in pavilions located around the UCL at Here East campus in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Each self-built structure will explore experimental techniques in engineering and architecture and be used by students to produce research from the perspective of structural, environmental and architectural experience.

The projects will be on public view during the build on 12th March and will remain on view until 14th March.

LAUNCH: COLOURING LONDON

Colouring London is an open data platform being built and tested at UCL. It is designed to collect, collate and display and share statistical information about London’s buildings in an easy-to-understand coloured map. The hope is that the project becomes the first port of call for citizen-sourced data on the city’s fabric.

Detailed data on the fabric of cities including London is currently very fragmented and extremely difficult for scientists to access. In the UK, the Treasury holds the most comprehensive data of this kind within its tax database, but access to this information is heavily restricted, even for academic research. Colouring London is designed to be a collaborative project that engages everyone interested in London and its buildings. The project celebrates citizens’ collective knowledge of London, promoting sustainability and diversity within the city.

Colouring London is the first project of its kind in the world and the CASA team has already been in discussion with authorities in Milan and Chicago, who are keen to learn more from the project.

The Bartlett Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) is developing Colouring London in partnership with Greater London Authority, Historic England and Ordnance Survey.

EXHIBITION: THE NEXT 100 YEARS

The Next 100 Years exhibition

The Bartlett’s 100 days x 100 stories will culminate in an exhibition hosted at The Bartlett’s headquarters at 22 Gordon Street in Bloomsbury.

This future-facing exhibition will ask members of the public to nominate the issues they believe are the big challenges facing the built environment though social media. The responses, generated by academics and students from across The Bartlett will be presented in this exhibition.

CONFERENCE: URBAN TRANSFORMATIONS IN SIERRA LEONE – LESSONS LEARNED

This one-day conference will facilitate dialogues on how research about urban development in Freetown can be applied to influence policy and planning practices towards the transformation of informal settlements in Sierra Leone.

The conference will present research conducted by the Sierra Leone Urban Research Centre (SLURC) a partnership between The Bartlett Development Planning Unit (UCL) and the Institute of Geography and Development Studies (Njala University) with a funding grant from Comic Relief.

CONFERENCE: THE CASE FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING: GLOBAL SOLUTIONS FOR HOUSING AND SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE POLICY

Affordable Housing Conference:

Organised by The Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management, this major one-day conference will issue a call for participants in April 2019 to put together a group of nationally significant organisations that want to make a real and lasting impact towards transforming how affordable housing is delivered in the UK.

Participants will evaluate emerging tools and models for delivering affordable housing, and to explore successful international case studies from cities across the world who have taken innovative approaches to solving their own housing crises. The focus of the event will be developing globally-inspired solutions for London and the UK, with a particular emphasis on delivery through housing associations.

LAUNCH: BUILT ENVIRONMENT CLUB NEW YORK

UCL Built Environment Clubs (BECs) are a world-class network of expertise for alumni of UCL, and foster a programme of sustainable change in the built environment across the world. BECs are established in eight cities across three continents: in China, Korea, Japan, Chile & Ecuador.

2019 sees the launch of the ninth Built Environment Club in New York, NY, USA. UCL’s vision for this global network is that, together, its alumni and local built environment professionals will positively influence the development of urbanisation and regeneration programmes and government policy.

Dean of The Bartlett
The Dean of The Bartlett, Professor Alan Penn, will step down in 2019 following two five-year terms in the role – the maximum allowed by UCL.

Recruitment for the new Dean was launched in November 2018. The successful candidate will be announced Spring 2019 and take up their position in September 2019.

The new Dean will be tasked with leading key future objectives for The Bartlett. Some of these include establishing a UCL Energy Impact Accelerator programme, encouraging and supporting cross-disciplinary practice, maximising opportunities for cross-disciplinary work at Here East, playing a key role in UCL East, and a focus on equality, diversity and inclusion.

Alan Penn will return to The Bartlett, following a year’s sabbatical, to continue his work as Professor in Architectural and Urban Computing in The Bartlett School of Architecture’s Space Syntax Laboratory where his research will focus on understanding the way that the design of the built environment affects the patterns of social and economic behaviour of organisations and communities.

THE BARTLETT SUMMER SHOW 2017

● The Bartlett School of Architecture’s world-famous annual student showcase returns to the School’s re-fabricated RIBA-shortlisted home in the heart of Bloomsbury

● Over 650 of the world’s most creative architecture students will exhibit work to the public in a free two-week show, open daily from Saturday 24 June – Saturday 8 July

● The show forms part of the month-long London Festival of Architecture

The Bartlett School of Architecture UCL will present its annual student showcase, The Bartlett Summer Show, from 24 June – 8 July 2017, returning for the first time to the School’s re-fabricated home of 22 Gordon Street, which has won an RIBA London Region Award and been nominated for AJ100 Building of the Year.

The annual celebration of student work is one of the world’s biggest architecture degree shows. Almost 700 architecture students will present a range of inventive, creative and visual work, from models and drawings, to films, multimedia installations and computer fabrications.

The show takes place during the month-long London Festival of Architecture, and annually attracts over 7000 visitors making it one of the most hotly anticipated events in the architectural calendar.

This year, the show will be opened by visionary designer Ross Lovegrove. Speaking about The Bartlett School of Architecture, Ross says: “Today art, design and architecture are coalescing at an accelerating pace, transforming our physical man-made world with forms and structures that stimulate our sense of wonder and progress.

The Bartlett is at the forefront of this transformation as it nurtures minds that see no divisions in creative endeavour. I see the Bartlett as an incubator of inevitability that will stimulate a profound change in the nature of industry and universal principles of design in the 21st Century.”

Describing the significance of the return to 22 Gordon Street for the Summer Show, Professor Bob Sheil, Director of the School of Architecture says: “This is an historic moment for The Bartlett School of Architecture. This is the first time we’re using our new space at 22 Gordon Street not just to learn, create and research but to share our work and our unique approach with the general public, hopefully sparking conversations about what it means to be an architect all over the capital and beyond.”

30-Second London: The 50 Key Visions, Events and Architects that Shaped the City, Each Explained in Half a Minute

A stunningly illustrated whistle-stop tour of the 50 key themes that have shaped or left their mark on this historic and inimitable city.

You may recognise Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Tower Bridge, but how much do you know about Roman London, or the two cities at the heart of this vast and varied metropolis? What engineering innovations allowed London to become the bustling modern city it is today? How did Londoners survive through fire, plague and war? Who were the architects of London’s notable buildings and homes for the masses?

30-Second London presents a unique insight into one of the world’s most exciting cities, where high-tech skyscrapers sit alongside ornate baroque churches, and where art, music and theatre thrive on the city’s diversity. Dr Edward Denison is an architectural historian, writer and photographer. Accelerate into University
Architecture for all, not just a few

Accelerate into University is the first programme of its kind to support 15 to 17 year olds from non-traditional backgrounds who are keen to go into architecture.

The programme has come as a direct response to the concern within higher education that people from less-advantaged backgrounds are unable to pursue a career in architecture and the profession due to the rise in fees. This challenge is exacerbated by a huge deficiency in access to high-quality advice in schools about what architecture is like as a profession. Accelerate is a pioneering first step towards addressing this need.

The fifteen month initiative has now reached the professional practice mentoring phase: During these three months, the architects are supporting the mentees in their practices to complete a design brief which accelerates their drawing, model making and critical thinking skills for university entrance, whilst also integrating them into a professional and creative working environment.

Alongside their partnership of the Accelerate mentoring programme, UCL’s Bartlett School of Architecture has just announced £100 000 in scholarships to architecture students.
