MG Central Feature at Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024

This sculpture created by Gerry Judah for Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024 celebrates 100 years of the iconic British marque MG, which was founded in 1924 by Cecil Kimber as Morris Garages.

It consists of a twenty-four metre diameter hoop threaded by a thirty-three metre long tapered spar, tipped at each end with the definitive open-top sports cars representing MG’s past and future – 1962 MG B Roadster and the new MG Cyberster.

The spar is a hollow tube fabricated from laser-cut steel plates welded together to form the final double-curved, eight-sided shape. It’s suspended with twenty-four stainless steel cables; each cable is pre-tensioned to tighten the whole structure like a wire-wheel on a sports car, creating a single highly-strung rigid structure.

The total weight is forty tonnes including the two cars, and the entire structure is made from steel.
