Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter wins the competition for the Wadden Sea Centre in UNESCO – World Heritage Area

Wadden Sea Centre

”We are very grateful to be given the chance to create the architectural framework for the Wadden Sea Centre. It has been essential to create a building complex that relates specifically to the particular landscape and at the same time carry traditional building techniques into a contemporary expression.

Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter always seeks to enhance and utilize the inherent characteristics of the specific site. We hope that we will accomplish adding value and unique qualities to the local area by creating a robust and beautiful building that will inspire and encourage the exploration of the region”
says Dorte Mandrup.

Wadden Sea Centre and the city of Esbjerg now announce the proposal by Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter as the winning scheme for the extension and refurbishment of the Wadden Sea Centre in Vester Vedsted. Located in the southern part of Jutland; Denmark.

The Wadden Sea is Denmark’s largest National park and appointed World Heritage by UNESCO.

”The winning proposal is unique and places focus on the main goal of the Wadden Sea Centre: To create awareness and understanding for the marshland and the Wadden Sea. The architecture is sustainable, visionary and bold and brings forth the Centre as an didactic information centre of the future“ says jury member and leader of the Centre Klaus Melbye.

Head of committee – Mayor Johnny Søttrup elaborates on the winning scheme:
“Throughout the evaluation of the architectural proposals, It has been of great importance that the architecture is in harmony with the vast, horizontal landscape of the marsh as well as being significant and one of a kind”.

The proposal by Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter is an interpretation of the local building tradition and the rural farmhouse typology, which is significant in the area.

The buildings will be erected with thatched roofs and facades. The proposal herby underlines the tactile qualities and robustness that can be found in traditional crafts and the materials of the region.

The new building is made possible through collaboration between the city of Esberg, Realdania, The foundation of A.P Moeller, Arbejdsmarkedets Feriefond, Friluftsraadet – The Danish Outdoor Council, The foundation of Louis Petersens and The foundation of Augustinus.
