New Cancer Counseling Center at Næstved Hospital
Design: We Architecture
Næstved Competition Entry
The new Cancer Care Center in Næstved is located in close proximity to the regional Hospital. The purpose of the center is helping anyone affected by cancer through professional help in exceptional buildings specifically designed for this.
The surroundings of the oblong site are mainly characterized by a trafficated road to the east and outdated 60’s buildings belonging to the hospital. In order to create a building inspired by the model of healing architecture, the Cancer Care Centre was designed as an introvert building, opening up towards two inner courtyards. From the street, the building materializes as a four sided polygon covered by a soft landscape of explosive greenery. From the interior, the building appears as a transparent yet intimate space where the green gardens are incorporated in the indoor spaces.
Interiorly, the functions are divided into 3 parts. The “living room” is placed between the two courtyards and serves as the main space of the center. The two remaining parts, the public functions and the administration part, are organized as loops around the courtyards, ensuring constant contact to the green gardens in the corridors.

New Cancer Counseling Center at Næstved Hospital, Sjaelland
Design: EFFEKT
Livsrum is EFFEKT’s 1. prize project in the competition for a new cancer counseling center at Næstved hospital in Denmark in collaboration with Hoffmann and Lyngkilde.
The center is designed as a cluster of seven small houses around two green outdoor spaces. Each house has its own specific function and together they form a coherent sequence of different spaces and functions such as a library, kitchen, conversation rooms, lounge, shops, gym, and wellness facilities. The house offers a wide range of different rooms for informal advice, therapy and interaction with a focus on the users’ comfort and wellbeing.
A varying roof height and materials used means that the building will have its own unique architectural character that clearly distinguishes it from the surrounding hospital buildings. With the location of the cancer counseling centre close to the hospital’s cancer ward, it is set for a closer collaboration between hospital staff and the Danish Cancer Society.
Construction is scheduled to begin in August 2012. Already in the spring of 2013 the Danish Cancer Society staff and volunteers in Næstved expects to offer cancer patients and caregivers a warm welcome in the new cancer counseling center.
Leif Vestergaard Pedersen, CEO of the Danish Cancer Society is excited about the new project, which architecturally has managed to strike a tone in which wellbeing and openness is at play.
“The house will feel homely and comfortable and provide room for all forms of activities. The centre will be located quite close to the hospital, this will make it easy for cancer patients and their relatives to come by for a cup of coffee and maybe a talk between treatments “says Leif Vestergaard Pedersen. Hans Peter Svendler, director of Realdania explains, “The winning project shows a very compelling vision of how a counseling centre can be arranged and we look forward to seeing the finished house.”
Excerpts from the jury’s report read: “It’s a compelling simple and logical plan composition with fine spatial experiences in the movement around the inner courtyards and the centre’s in-house facilities.”.
EFFEKT has over the past years through publications, exhibitions, prizes and awards, and a number of architectural and planning projects been hailed as part of the new generation at the Danish architectural scene. EFFEKT is currently realizing their 1.prize project for a new, 30,000 sqm Art Academy in Tallinn, Estonia. The project was one of six projects nominated for the world’s best education building at the World Architecture Festival in 2009.
EFFEKT is at the moment finalists in Carlsberg’s big international competition for a new visitor’s center and is simultaneously working on the realization of their first prize project at Carlsberg in Copenhagen, the Carlsberg Station Area, one of Denmark’s biggest building projects, in collaboration with a larger advisory team.
EFFEKT was established in 2005 and employs 17 full time staff under the leadership of the two architects and founding partners Tue Hesselberg Foged and Sinus Lynge.
