Government Office Hub Odense
The Danish Building and Property Agency has awarded the turnkey contract for the construction of a future Government Office Hub in Odense. The building’s load-bearing construction will be built in timber and are designed by C.F. Møller Architects.
Timber buildings play a major role in minimising greenhouse gas emissions from the construction sector.
In new buildings, the energy and carbon emissions stemming from producing the construction materials (often called ’embodied carbon’) is often more than that from heating the building for 50 years.
When we replace concrete and steel with timber in the loadbearing construction, it is possible to reduce the embodied carbon of buildings by between 30-50%.
The use of timber in buildings also works as a carbon sink, storing carbon from the atmosphere for the lifespan of the building, and thus contributing further to reduce the concentration of green-house gases in the atmosphere. Every cubic metre of timber built in the building will store 750kg carbon from the atmosphere.
Timber buildings are typically lighter and quicker to build than concrete buildings. Norwegian data* shows that construction times can be reduced by 20%, leading to lower running costs for the construction site, and building users can move in sooner.
The loadbearing constructions of timber buildings typically weigh 30-45% less than concrete build-ings. This means that there will be the need for fewer heavy goods vehicles transporting the con-struction materials through the city to the construction site.
Norwegian data has also shown improved health and safety on timber construction sites, with 50% fewer sick days, less dust and noise, greater tidiness and more well-being, when compared to traditional concrete construction sites.
