Research and Knowledge Park in Odense, Funen, Denmark – Won
The architectural firm C. F. Møller A / S, SLA A / S and Alectia A / S have been appointed as planners of a 200,000 m² Research and Knowledge Park and Portal Area at Odense University.
On 12 May 2009, the real estate company Freja A / S chose the architectural firm C. F. Møller’s proposal as a starting point for the new Research Village in Odense after completing a parallel assignment on the development of the area.
In competition with five other consortia – led by the architectural firms Aart, KHR, Cubo, Arkitema and Creo – a unanimous judging committee pointed to the architectural firm C. F. Møller, SLA and Alectia’s proposal as the proposal that best met the visions of the new Forskerby. The proposal is highlighted for its consistent sustainable approach, which is based on all the programme’s m² being gathered in one dense urban development, which mixes the research and knowledge park’s 100,000 m² with the intended mixed functions in the Portal area as well as 100,000 m² service, family and research housing, dormitories, institutions and hotel.
In addition to the obvious sustainable benefits (compact buildings, shorter infrastructural routes, pleasant microclimate and minimal consumption of built-up land), the idea has great potential for a real integration of researchers’ work with the surrounding community. This is where school children, pensioners and business people will be able to meet and be inspired by the research that will drive Denmark into the knowledge society of the future. The proposal is thus built up as a dense city with larger and smaller public urban spaces, where all outward-facing functions are located in the surrounding ground floors.
Partner Lone Wiggers states:
“In order to qualify our competition proposal for Freja A / S, we have in the process benefited greatly from professor of cultural geography at the University of Copenhagen Christian Wickmann Matthiessen, former director of the research park in Hørsholm (Scion-DTU) Preben Pamsgaard and NCC Property Development, Kolding, who have all contributed with good advice and experience in the process, It has been a special pleasure to make a plan that gives a concrete idea of how the research can spread like rings in the water, away from the ivory tower of the past and
Therefore, the plan is full of meeting places where the exchange can take place. Here, the dense city comes into its own, because the compact solution is not only the most sustainable, it also brings the users closer to each other. we reduce the city’s footprint and thus preserve more green nature, which gives Forskerbyen an attractive environment – a simple and concrete example of sustainable urban development in practice.”
Initially, the goal is for 75,000 m² of the total plan to be completed by 2020. The local plan must be available by summer 2010.

Partner Lone Wiggers udtaler:
