BSHF is pleased to announce that the World Habitat Awards will now be presented at the World Urban Forum and UN-Habitat Governing Council events in April of each year, increasing opportunities for international exposure, networking and dissemination of the award-winning approaches.

The timetable for the awards is therefore being adjusted and the closing date for submissions for the current cycle of the World Habitat Awards is now 2 May 2014.

This global architectural competition were established in 1985 by the Building and Social Housing Foundation (BSHF) as part of its contribution to the United Nations International Year of Shelter for the Homeless.

World Habitat Awards Architecture Competition

Projects are sought that:

• demonstrate practical, innovative and sustainable solutions to current housing issues faced by countries all around the world.
• can be transferred or adapted for use as appropriate.
• are already being implemented ie not at design, planning or early stages of development
• view the term habitat from a broad perspective and bring other benefits as well, such as energy or water saving, income generation, social inclusion, community and individual empowerment, health benefits, capacity building or education.

The competition is open to any individual, organisation or government agency that has an innovative and sustainable housing solution in any country of the world. Two awards of £10,000 and a trophy are presented each year at a UN-Habitat event.

The Building and Social Housing Foundation (BSHF) is an independent research organisation that promotes sustainable development and innovation in housing through collaborative research and knowledge transfer.

Established in 1976, BSHF works both in the UK and internationally to identify innovative housing solutions and to foster the exchange of information and good practice. BSHF is committed to promoting housing policy and practice that is people-centred and environmentally responsible. All research carried out has practical relevance and addresses a range of current housing issues worldwide.

World Habitat Awards 2009

The Building and Social Housing Foundation is currently seeking entries for the World Habitat Awards 2009 competition.

The World Habitat Awards were initiated in 1985 and seek to identify practical, innovative and sustainable solutions to current housing issues faced by countries of the Global South as well as the North, which are capable of being transferred or adapted for use elsewhere.

The competition is open to all individuals and organisations, including central and local governments, NGOs, community-based groups, research organisations and the private sector.

Each year a panel of international judges assesses the projects entered for the competition and selects two winners. An award of £10,000 is presented to the winners at the annual United Nations global celebration of World Habitat Day.

Last year’s World Habitat Awards were presented to Champlain Housing Trust, USA and Preventing Typhoon Damage to Housing, Vietnam. Details of these two winning projects and the competition finalists can be found on the World Habitat Awards
