Panama Canal Proposal – Design Contest
Location: Panama, Central America
1 Oct 2010 – registration closing date
As a celebration of the school’s 10th anniversary and in commemoration of the 200 years of the independence movement in most Latin American countries, ISTHMUS (Escuela de Arquitectura y Diseño de América Latina y el Caribe), is sponsoring a competition to submit, through creative far-fetched proposals, new images for the Panama Canal.
This construction is one of the modern wonders of the world and one of the most important symbols of our continent. The crossing between the oceans is an exceptional and unforgettable experience.
How can it be enhanced? What can be done to make it even more memorable?
The competition is open to all and has no inscription fees. Up to three proposals of the intervened image of one of the Canal Locks (Miraflores) can be submitted. The image should be accompanied by a short explanatory text.
There are no cash prizes, but an effort is being done to include all the submissions in a final publication, and to obtain funding for awards which will be announced as available.
Deadline: 1 Oct 2010

Isthmus architecture school Panama
Isthmus is a small architecture school in Panama. Isthmus was founded by architects from Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Chile and other Latin American countries. The Isthmus model is quite different from most of Latin American universities, since instead of being semestrial and having 5 or 6 different subjects at a time, is trimestrial and consists of 5 subjects of two weeks each, in which teachers from all around the world give a workshop, a seminar on technics, drawing, theory, etc.
Isthmus also have two master degree programmes on Bioclimatic Architecture and on Industrial Design. So though it is small, Isthmus have had the help and company of many interesting architects. Recently Isthmus had a summer workshop with the presence of the norwegian architect Hans Skotte and was on Emergency Shelters.
For the Isthmus anniversary instead of having a big party the school donated 30 libraries to small schools in the poorest sectors of Panama City, and decided to promote the Panama Canal Design Competition.
