LIBRARY DESIGN WITH CENTRAL BOOK VOID

Daegu Architecture Contest

Haiko Cornelissen Architecten in collaboration with Paul- Eric Schirr-Bonnans Architecte have designed a proposal of the Daegu Gosan Central Library in Korea.

The proposal is designed around a central book void that is the programmatic, orientational and structural core of the building. Given the centrality of books to the history of information transfer, the proposal is designed around a central book void. Influenced by the traditional Korean Hanok house that are organized around a void, the design gives a central place to the physical and aesthetic presence of the book. While the building has only three main floors, the void has five additional mezzanine levels for easy access to the books; one mezzanine in the basement and two for the ground floor and first floor.

Mezzanines stick out in one corner per level void so that the void space can be enjoyed to the fullest. These spaces contain additional programs such as a lounge and circulation desk for the reading space. The children’s rooms can be found at the bottom of the void. All vertical circulation and services are adopted in the core around the void so that there is limited interference with the library spaces. Outside the vertical core there are reading and data rooms with triple height spaces.

In addition to acting as an information mediator, the building also functions as community cultural center where local initiatives are accommodated with exhibitions, lectures and other means. Local residents can absorb and produce ideas in a pleasant environment that fosters creativity. Therefore amenities are included that add a new and more informal dimension to the library. A café located on the ground floor provides a place where information can be absorbed and discussed in a more informal setting. Following the Pungsu-jiri-seol principle of avoiding sharp corners, the triangular layout has round edges that guide the pedestrian flow around the building.

As an example to the public, our proposal is an environmentally sustainable building. The glass façade is folded to become self-supporting. Due to the folding, parts of the façade point up towards the sun. Those panels facing up and south contain photovoltaic fritting to harvest the sun’s energy. The panels that are folded down reduce the heat load of the building by reducing direct sun. Furthermore, geothermal energy is used, as well as high density insulation and heat recycling to minimize the energy usage of the building.

New technologies have caused changes in the consumption of certain social activities. Digitalization has converted physical space into virtual. Terminologies related to the classical type of library, such as book browsing, controlled access, collections, customer service and preservation of archives, have been replaced with metadata, open access, linked, virtual services, digital archiving. Digital paradigm under its form is closely connected to categories which include unpredictable and changeable where flexibility is required.

Our proposal is a social centre, an event in the park, urban like an extension of the city with a strong relation to the landscape.

Library is organized into six clusters that flow one into another and are extended in three levels of open space. The fourth level was designed for employees, stuff and preservation of archives. The atrium glazing is designed for maximum transparency with the minimum of vertical interruption to the panoramic view.

The brisoles are angled differently so that they control light changes over the day course, and through the seasons, making a peaceful place for reading and studying. Office level on the second floor covered with the solid lightweight facade panels. During the day, the sun glints off the white cladding while at night the facades transform into shimmering curtains of projected light.

As a part of our strategy, the furniture usage is heavily employed instead of walls. Furniture mobility indicates a higher level of interaction and is open for different usages. It implies that new additional spatial configurations can be created and thus generates space and improves utilization. Shelves are designed to enable and show the effect of the walls, guaranteeing high stability. The improper shelves arrangement provides neat boundary formation which gives an impression of the special direction where intimate nooks and small squares suitable for workshops and group research offer experience of movements through the park.

Ramp and the step-ramp make an avenue for the library visitors. The step-ramp platform inside the library creates a series of small spaces suitable for reading. The composition of the platforms causes the special form of the exterior amphitheater to be an extension of internal working space.

Daegu Gosan Public Library
A Collection of Ideas

A Building for the City

The project reflects the importance of the library as a place of learning and knowledge transfer but also a place of shared culture and personal interaction. As a centre of learning it responds to the need to contain information both digitally and physically and has the flexibility to adapt to changes in how knowledge is transferred in the future. The library also acts as a centre for the community, a place where the inhabitants of the city can meet, discuss and develop ideas.

A Symbol of Learning for Daegu

At the scale of the city, the library has a strong urban presence, acting as a symbol of learning and shared culture, offering a sense of quiet civility to Daegu. Like the Erechtheion in Athens, the building makes gestures to its context, with each elevation offering a different face responding uniquely to its context. It appears as a cluster of buildings, an ensemble which generates its own miniature urbanity. A colonnade marks the entrance to this ensemble allowing access to a secluded courtyard within the library, a cloistered space of shared learning.

An Urban Ensemble

The library is conceived as an ensemble of urban structures like a miniature city. Each structure is unique, with its own proportions scale and order responding both to the city of Daegu and the specific requirements of the brief.

Each block houses one of four essential elements of the library:

• Library Resources (containing information storage, retrieval and comprehension)
• The Children’s Library
• Public Learning Spaces (containing exhibition, lecture and lifelong learning)
• Library Support (containing staff and library administration) This ensemble creates a series of incidental spaces; enclosed courtyards which contain the common spaces of the building.

A Place of Shared Learning

Surrounded by the four library structures, the central courtyard is a place of knowledge transfer and shared culture. Taking influence from both the classical forum and the monastic cloister, a sheltered & safe amenity space is created. A place for the community to meet & bond, share experiences & knowledge, and for children to play.

The main collection and reading spaces are housed in the largest block to the north east of the site. A dramatic triple height space containing both physical and digital resources gives way to a series of more intimate cellular spaces allowing for individual study.

To the south of the site is a sunken multipurpose room acting as a lecture theatre and exhibition hall, lit by clerestory windows at ground level. Above this sits the lifelong learning room.

The children’s library occupies a two storey element, creating a degree of separation between age groups. This independent block is connected to the main library but provides isolation from the more quiet areas.

The Library as a Green Place in the City

The Library has a green roof with carefully selected planting. Sustainable planting can filter out air- and water-borne pollution; provide an acoustic buffer to local traffic; help with rainwater attenuation; modify the temperature & humidity of the local microclimate; and protect & enhance insect biodiversity.

The Library’s Cultural Legacy

The library is constructed of thick brick walls, giving it mass and permanence. It has a sense of civic importance where the storage of information and the transfer of knowledge are considered sacred acts.

Brick is one of the oldest building materials. Its history spans that of civilisation. It is a simple concept: moulded clay becomes fired brick, a unit of comfortable weight and sensible proportions. On its own the brick is very simple, but in combination it can assemble to create great buildings from order and complexity.

The Library as a Beacon of Sustainable Construction

Brick is also a sustainable material. It has a high embodied energy, offset in a remarkably long lifespan, with very low maintenance. Brick may be salvaged and cleaned for reuse in a new building, or recycled into new bricks or aggregate.

Brick has the advantage of a high thermal mass. Its density and heat capacity make it particularly suited to the climate of Daegu, where its thermal inertia can absorb the sweltering summer heat and mitigate the coldness of winter. This is known as the “thermal flywheel effect”: the brick mass absorbs thermal energy when the surroundings are higher in temperature, and releases when the surroundings are cooler.

Design Concept

The advanced technology of reading materials by computer, Kindle and even cell‐phone devices helps people easily access to information even way much more than what library could provide in last decades. Therefore, the main function of library seems to have a change in order to accommodate the current trend of getting and providing information.

As for designing a new library in this era, our design concept is to agree that people are in need of finding places to sit and get relaxed for getting information from books, magazine, articles, etc. Thus, the expanded program for the local community by providing classrooms, and exhibition area, lecture room, semi‐private reading areas, digital data corner, etc. will be another major change in current library system. We believe not in a dramatic way but strongly the new design of space that should convey this change in a way to enhance and motivate public to come and enjoy the use of library.

Design Description

The first ideas we aimed for this library was that it should have private reading area with opened arcade. In order to achieve it, the distance of book shelves each other was developed based on necessary space allocated for people looking for a specific book section and for people who want to take a time to sit and enjoy reading in private. By this arrangement, a unit of book shelves area was created and it is arrayed in a direction to make a form of architecture.

Then, it has been horizontally inclined each other to a certain degree by providing enough entrance, book shelves, semi private open reading area one after another. By doing so, its shape seems more naturally formed as books on a shelf.

The space that we imagine for the library was all about user friendly, so the space should be well lighten by the sun. Hence, a mass of rectangular is stretched to pass through the each book sections to get a proper opening with lights from the sky. Also, parking lot entry was designed in the same manner.

For the better use of this extensive sunlight, we brought Kalwall (transparent wall system) into our main design elements. Its transparency is to get enough brightness from the sun, and at the same time, its heat resistance also good for a climate like Daegu with four distinct seasons. In addition, its easy construction method would be even beneficial for the realization of the project.

The structure system we expect is basically reinforced concrete structure. Its structural mega walls (bookshelves walls) act as columns. With floor slabs, they will act as a truss system. Thus, for the mechanical design, we locate the space on level 3 floor for its easy ventilation. The interior air flow will easily resume from the top floor to circulate air into lower floor which return air will be located. The travel of the air will easily flow from the inner surface of shelves at walls and under the roof area. Plus, the opening area from the north to the south will create natural ventilation of interior space.

We strongly believe that those sustainable design approaches to this library apparently support the community well with its well lit opened, yet privately separated space, as well as its energy savings.

An entry into the Daegu Gosan Public Library Competition

“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” Marcus Tullius Cicero

Knowledge is not about libraries or books or the internet. The accumulation of knowledge is essentially the foundation of civilization. Libraries have traditionally been the locations to store the information. Now libraries have the opportunity to be much more. They are the hubs to access, share, and to discuss knowledge. They no longer are mainly about storage and preservation. They are about ease of access and about gathering of people.

Further, the nature of how the information is shared has changed. With the advent of digital technology space no longer needs to be spatially ordered. Spaces can be much more dynamic and flexible, allowing for users to shape them more freely. The users themselves can form new ways of gathering and sharing knowledge with each other. The library is their tool to be interpreted.

In this design the library is consciously not a singular gesture, but more as a series of interpretable spaces. Previously libraries were seen as places to gain access to books, this library provides places for the dissemination and sharing of knowledge.

2010 Biennial Event of Architecture and Culture in Daegu

International Architecture Competition

Theme: “2020 DAEGU”

Entries will deal with creating a Daegu Culture Industrial Cluster Development Plan for the year 2020.

Daegu Design Competition

OUTLINE

Daegu, in the Republic of Korea, has always been one of the three major cities in Korea, but for most citizens living outside of Daegu it is remembered by representations in old movies. However, new industries and business opportunities have been created. Some big issues standing in the way of embracing these opportunities are that Daegu as an urban institution has not always responded positively to change and inland cities are generally more conservative in response to social progress.

China is now a huge market, and steps must be taken to capitalize on this burgeoning economy. The west coast city of Incheon has taken steps toward creating a sustainable city plan in order to vitalize growth. Daegu is being outpaced by more adaptable cities. There are 2.5 million residents in the Daegu Metropolitan Area, and Daegu remains a central feature of the Yeungnam region, but without a specific vision or goals Daegu is doomed to remain in the past and continue to fade in the future.

We hope to create a new vision and plan for Daegu that can be implemented within the next 10 years. The purpose of this international competition is to bring together the best minds to present detailed plans that will specifically lay out a dynamic and sustainable future for Daegu’s city structure.

There needs to be an emphasis on businesses that will carry Daegu through to the next century. There is particular interest in the CT(Culture Technology) and IT(Information Technology) industrial cluster integrating with Daegu’s rich cultural resources in order to foster new growth engines such as cultural industries, gaming, mobile content and etc. Next generation industrial clusters that consider Daegu’s unique culture and can serve as growth engines for the new city of Daegu will be deemed suitable for the competition.

We hope to present contest entries that utilize the combined experience and talent of the participants in order to establish Daegu as a world leader in the industries of tomorrow. The remains of the past simply cannot present a vision for the future that is why we are calling upon young and talented architects to share their creativity and vision in creating new plans for the future.
