ONE PRIZE 2013 WINNERS

Terreform ONE is proud to announce the winners of this year’s open international design competition for building resilient cities:

This year’s ONE Prize called upon architects, engineers, ecologists, urban planners, and designers to “stormproof” cities with competent planning, and ecologically sound and socially responsible design solutions. The competition drew 168 teams with around 310 participants from over 15 countries and five continents. Participants from around the globe deployed sophisticated designs to alleviate storm and flood impact through various urban interventions. Protective green spaces, barrier islands, alternative living, and coastal public space solutions are one of the few schemes that either reinvigorated existing infrastructure or re-purposed spaces towards environmental adaptation, putting design in the service of the community.

ONE Prize 2012 Winners

Terreform ONE announces the finalists of ONE PRIZE 2012: FROM BLIGHT TO MIGHT, The Third Annual International Design Competition that promotes the transformation of cities with innovation.

http://www.oneprize.org/12finalistsl

In the context of a struggling US economy and the tension of stagnant unemployment, ONE PRIZE 2012 called for ideas that simultaneously address social, ecological, and economic issues through collaborative action and innovative design. Through this lens, the objective was to reinvigorate deindustrialized, derelict urban areas and repurpose space for economic growth and employment opportunity.

The ONE PRIZE seeks invention. To move towards a sustainable and humane global community, innovators from all disciplines must rethink the way we conceptualize economic and ecological sustainability. How can the US best demonstrate its creative forces and realign its prominence in the discipline of innovative design in the global community?

The competition drew 115 teams and 655 team members from more than 20 countries and five continents. The ONE PRIZE 2012 participants innovatingly shed light on potentials to actively retrofit our future by transforming aging infrastructure to make space for jobs. From occupying vacant buildings to urban voids, many entries looked to establish new civic centers. Sites ranged from the American Midwest to Brooklyn, from Ghana to Romania. Many questioned the American Dream and offered new 21st century possibilities.

Several projects called for a rethinking of the boundary between the derelict area and its adjacent urban fabric. What connections can be made and how? This brought new programs of activity to the fore with speculations around the potentials of urban agriculture, research campuses, and new ecologically-responsible urban infrastructures. From reclaiming waste to manufacturing territory, each proposal looked to activate a transformation at both local and global scales and blur the once distinct line between the civic spaces and the spaces of production in the city.

The Jury, chaired by the Speaker of the New York City Council Christine C. Quinn will meet in late September to select the winners. This year Speaker Quinn will be joined by a distinguished panel of thinkers and designers, including:
