Shortlist announced: New Town House Building, Kingston University

31 July 2013 – The shortlist is announced today for the selection of a multi-disciplinary team to design the New Town House Building on Kingston University’s Penrhyn Road campus, London.

The New Town House Building will serve as the public face of Kingston University and provide a welcoming gateway to the campus that will be inclusive, contemporary and civic. It will be the biggest construction project that the University has embarked upon to date and will provide better access to key student support services, as well as accommodating a new enlarged learning resources centre, multi-function auditorium, rehearsal and innovative learning spaces. The New Town House Building will reinforce the University’s vision to be internationally recognised for its creative approach to education, with practical outcomes that benefit people and communities.

The Panel which evaluated the Pre-Qualification Questionnaire returns included four architects and an expert in the history of design. The panel comprised, from the University: the Vice-Chancellor, the chair of the Board of Governors, the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Corporate Affairs/University Secretary, the Dean of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, the Head of the School of Architecture and Landscape and the Estates Directors. They were joined by John Jenner (Greenhill Jenner Architects) acting as the RIBA Architect Adviser.

The five shortlisted teams (in alphabetical order of lead architect) are:
– Bennetts Associates
– Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios
– Grafton Architects LLP
– Haworth Tompkins
– O’Donnell & Tuomey

On announcing the shortlist, Professor Julius Weinberg – Vice-Chancellor of the University – said: “The quality of the entries was very high and I am extremely pleased with the shortlist. We are excited about working with the eventual winner and together creating a quality new building which will transform learning for our students’’. Sean Woulfe, Director of Estates Delivery at Kingston emphasised the importance of this building to everyone at the University, and its visibility to every passer-by. He said, “The building will have a major impact on every student, staff member and visitor who uses it. I’m delighted to have such talented architects on the list to help us get the most out of this high-profile site’’.

The five teams will now go on to prepare a tender return and concept design outlining the proposed architectural, building services and structural approach for the New Town House Building. The winner of the competition is expected to be announced in mid-December 2013.

Design Team sought for New Town House Building, Kingston University

RIBA Competitions is pleased to announce the launch of an invited design competition and tender submission on behalf of Kingston University. Expressions of Interest are sought from multi-disciplinary, architect-led teams based within the European Union with strong design and delivery skills for a major new building project at the University’s Penrhyn Road Campus in Kingston-upon-Thames.

The New Town House Building will reinforce Kingston University’s vision to be internationally recognised for its creative approach to education, with practical outcomes that benefit people and communities. It will replace an existing building on the site and occupy a prominent position on the northern edge of the Penrhyn Road Campus. The new landmark building will serve as the public face of the University and provide a welcoming gateway to the campus that will be inclusive, contemporary and civic. It will be a student facing buiding and is currently expected to accommodate a larger and enhanced learning resources centre (LRC), bringing together theory, practice, doing and making. The University also wants to provide better access to key student support services and to create a multi-function auditorium. This combination of functions would allow the University to support its learning community and to showcase what it does.

Following the pre-qualification phase, 5 architect-led teams (to also include a Building Services Designer, Structural & Civil Engineer and a Landscape Designer) will be invited to submit a tender return and design concepts outlining the proposed architectural, building services and structural approach, together with suggestions for improving legibility of the Penrhyn Road Campus. Each short-listed team will receive an honorarium of £6,000 (+VAT) which will be paid following submission and presentation of Stage 2 design proposals at a clarification interview.
