Ground breaks on the new US Embassy in Nine Elms
Leader of Wandsworth Council Ravi Govindia and U.S. Ambassador Matthew W. Barzun officially broke ground on the new American Embassy in London today (Wednesday).
The new Embassy, designed by KieranTimberlake, is now being built close to the Thames riverside in Nine Elms on the South Bank.

The complex is expected to open for business in 2017 when the ambassador and his staff will move to Battersea from Belgravia.
Cllr Govindia said: “We’re delighted work is now officially underway on what will be one of the most remarkable embassies in our great city. It is going to be a dazzling centrepiece for Nine Elms on the South Bank and will set new standards for low energy use and sustainability.
“The embassy’s move is also an incredible coup for Wandsworth. The US Government was among the very first institutions to buy-in to our vision for Nine Elms and their investment was a watershed moment in the area’s transformation.
“The Embassy has been a magnet for new investment and a vital catalyst for a regeneration programme which is delivering tens of thousands of jobs and homes.
“The ambassador and his staff are very welcome to Wandsworth!”
The new embassy will include a chancery, a consular section, support spaces, a U.S. Marine residence, access pavilions and parking.
Its design incorporates cutting edge sustainable features including aspirations for carbon neutrality, a self-sufficient water system and sets a goal for meeting the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) Excellent rating.
The area immediately south of the site is set to become a new public plaza. This open space will form a key link in a new linear park which will run all the way through Nine Elms from Vauxhall to Battersea Power Station.

About Nine Elms on the South Bank
Nine Elms on the South Bank is one of Europe’s biggest regeneration programmes.
More than 16,000 new homes will be built and enough business space to support 25,000 jobs.
A further 22,000 construction jobs will be created during the area-wide building programme.
The Northern Line Extension will provide the major transport artery which makes the new Nine Elms possible. An infrastructure project championed by Wandsworth Council, it has now won financial support from the Government and is working its way through the planning system.
A brand new public fresh produce market and centre for London’s foodies will be created at New Covent Garden Market.
An entire town centre is being formed within and around a rejuvenated Battersea Power Station.
Every new development will add to the area’s life and vitality with new cafes, bars, restaurants, cinemas, pubs, shops, boutiques, an auditorium, galleries, event venues and cultural attractions.
The new central London district will be set around a spectacular network of parks, public squares, riverside walks and gardens crafted by the world leading architects and urban planners.
The Linear Park – a continuous green corridor sweeping through the district from west to east – will provide a landscaped, green and pleasant pathway from Battersea Power Station all the way to Vauxhall.
This extraordinary green channel will be entirely open to the public and a focal point for shopping, sports, leisure and recreation, outdoor events and community life. Its edges will be lined with homes, shops, cafes, leisure venues and other attractions to draw people in and activate the space.
A new stretch of the Thames riverside walk will run the full length of the regeneration area, extending the cultural offer of the world famous South Bank through Vauxhall and all the way to Battersea Park.
An ambitious cycle strategy seeks to create a network of up to 23 interconnected routes including separate bike lanes on main roads like Nine Elms Lane and Battersea Park Road.
A new pedestrian and cycle bridge is proposed to cross the Thames from near the site of the new US Embassy and to link with the established communities of Pimlico on the north bank of the river.
Major developments now on site include Riverlight, Embassy Gardens, Battersea Power Station and the new US Embassy.

United States Announces Winner of New London Embassy Design Competition
U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Louis B. Susman, and Acting Director of the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations, Adam Namm, announced today that KieranTimberlake of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has won the design competition for the New London Embassy.

KieranTimberlake’s design met the goal of creating a modern, welcoming, timeless, safe and energy efficient embassy for the 21st century. Their concept most fully satisfied the requirements outlined in the design competition’s mission statement. The concept holds the greatest potential for developing a truly iconic embassy and is on the leading edge of sustainable design. KieranTimberlake is an architectural firm known for its commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.
Starting with 37 architectural submissions, the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations narrowed the number to a shortlist of nine firms. A distinguished jury of both American and British leaders in the fields of architecture, academia and diplomacy selected four firms for the final phase of the competition.
The four firms explored the symbolism of the embassy, its presence and position in the cityscape of London. Their goal was to create a building and site complex with a timeless quality to appropriately represent the United States of America in the United Kingdom.

The four competing architectural firms KieranTimberlake, Morphosis Architects, Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, and Richard Meier & Partners worked for nearly a year and made presentations to the jury which then recommended the winning design.
As KieranTimberlake moves forward with the design of the building, the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations and KieranTimberlake will be actively engaged in the consultation and planning process involving the Mayor’s office, the Wandsworth Borough Council, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, as well as residents in the area to ensure that the new embassy provides an appropriate home for the United States of America in London.
The anticipated ground breaking on this landmark embassy will be in 2013 with a goal to complete the construction in 2017.
