5 Suggestions for the Future of Sustainable Architecture – CHART ARCHITECTURE Finalists Announced

Five teams have been selected as finalists in the CHART ARCHITECTURE Competition 2017. The designs address this year’s theme THE LIVING CITY and thereby contribute to the global discussion on sustainable urbanisation, renewable resources and the urgent need for experimentation with upcycling and the reuse of materials.

The Finalists:

Team Members: Anna Astempniewicz Team Name: Ara Proposal Name: Algae Dome Pavilion Design: Space10 Country Of Residence: Gdansk (Poland) And Copenhagen School: The Royal Academy Of Fine Arts – Kadk 2016

Proposal Description: We propose a pavilion that is a simple and direct translation of a photo-bioreactor’s diagram into architecture. By arranging the tubular system with algae into a dome-like shape we create a pavilion that functions as a photo-bioreactor. The very utilitarian and technological infrastructure becomes architecture. It’s inviting, yet enclosed form provides shelter and creates oasis for social interaction.

Team Members: Harry Clover, Jack Cripps, Sebastian Gatz And Fabrian Puller Team Name: Ccgp Proposal Name: Adapt Pavilion Design: Gastronomy Contry Of Residence: Copenhagen School: The Royal Academy Of Fine Arts – Kadk 2017/18

Proposal Description: ADAPT is a pavilion which opens itself as the day warms and closes itself as the day cools without the need for external sources of energy, like a plant. It promotes a revolutionary new form of architecture that regulates itself independently and adapts spatially as a result of the kinetic performance of the materials from which it is made. ADAPT is the forerunner of a living city of buildings which lean, open or retract, changing form, function and regulatory state without the need to be connected to energy grids, taking the sustainability of buildings to the next level.

Team Members: Miki Morita And Suguru Kobayashi Team Name: Mok+S Architects Proposal Name: Stick Box Pavilion Design: Gastronomy Country Of Residence: Copenhagen School: The Royal Academy Of Fine Arts – Kadk And Kanagawa Univ / Kit Japan

Proposal Description: This pavilion project aims to work as a prototype using smaller timber modules made from forest thinning and left over wood from lumbering which is not usually regarded as an architectural material.
We hope that people, when experiencing the pavilion, will feel the familiar sized piece of the material and how it can potentially become an architectural material and create awareness about the environmental problem of forest thinning around the world.

Team Members: Kazumasa Takada Team Name: Yata Proposal Name: Paper Pavilion Pavilion Design: Gastronomy Country Of Residence: Copenhagen School: The Royal Academy Of Fine Arts – Kadk 2017

Proposal Description: For the theme of Sustainability, we set up the design goal to create a pavilion which has an appropriate durability for an event which to be held for a short time like CHART. We believe for a sustainable future it is necessary to reconsider the excesses acts of our daily life and adjust them appropriately. Therefore, by designing a pavilion with an appropriate architectural durability rather than using a material with excessive strength, which is often the case for this type of pavilion, the proposal attempts to imply a message against such excess. The paper pavilion is intentionally designed to be able to last a week rather than three months, for example.

Paper Pavilion, Kazumasa Takada, Yuriko Yagi and Yohei Tomioka, 2017:

Team Members: Mia Frykholm And Astrid Gabrielsson Team Name: M + A Proposal Name: Sunday Temple Pavilion Design: Gastronomy Country Of Residence: Copenhagen School: The Royal Academy Of Fine Arts – Kadk 2016 / 2017

Proposal Description: Ritual spaces have come to have a new purpose in our society. The shape of the pavilion is a reference to the Hampi temple in India. Today the religious and ceremonial spaces have in many cases been replaced by something else – instead of going to church on Sundays we take a ritual walk through IKEA’s warehouse or do our laundry comfortable with the familiar blue bag.

The blue IKEA bag is a symbol in society – the laundry bag that is an essential reminder of Sunday laundry rituals. It’s made to be durable / cheap / ideal size, to be mass-produced and spread worldwide. A simple wood support structure is used to create a temple embedded with the blue bags and labelled handles hang as ornaments. By mounting the bags on a supporting structure, to take the shape of a temple, they will bring another form of representation.
The openings of the bags are being suspended pointing in different directions so that when the wind fills the bags, the facade will come to life and have a constant moving or waving face. With lights inside, the pavilion will emit a blue glow during night-time.

Overview:

The proposals range from using biogas reactors, solar energy, leftovers from the tree industry, to IKEA bags and paper as the core material used for the construction of the pavilions. The finalists are: Algae Dome by Aleksander Wadas, Rafal Wroblewski, and Anna Stempniewicz; Adapt by Harry Clover, Jack Cripps, Sebastian Gatz and Fabian Puller; Stick Box by Miki Morita, Suguru Kobayashi and Keita Shishijima; Paper Pavilion by Kazumasa Takada, Yuriko Yagi and Yohei Tomioka; Sunday Temple by Mia Frykholm and Astrid Gabrielsson.

This year CHART ARCHITECTURE is judged by Bjarke Ingels, architect and founder of BIG Bjarke Ingels Group; Bjørnstjerne Christiansen, co-founder of SUPERFLEX; Claus Andersen, owner of Andersen’s Contemporary; Débora Mesa, architect and part of the team responsible for the Spanish Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale; Dorte Foss, architect; Klaus Kastbjerg, CEO and director of Union Holding A/S; and Simon Frommenwiler, architect and cofounder of HHF Architects.

The winning team will be announced on 2 September 2017 during CHART ART FAIR.

ABOUT CHART ARCHITECTURE

The CHART ARCHITECTURE competition, a key element of CHART SOCIAL, was launched in 2014 to promote young Nordic architects and explore the crossover between art and architecture. In 2017 CHART extended the call for applications to young and newly established architectural practices and welcomed students and recent graduates from the Nordic architecture schools.

The 2017 CHART ARCHITECTURE participants were asked to design and create pavilions to house gastronomy partners and SPACE10 during CHART ART FAIR. The entries will address the open source paradigm while contributing to the global discussion on sustainable urbanisation, renewable resources and the urgent need for experimentation with upcycling and the reuse of materials. The goal of CHART ARCHITECTURE for this edition is that participants will educate visitors about multifunctionality, investigative recycling methods, community object exchanges with innovative fabrication methods.

The winners of this year’s competition will be offered a mentorship programme by a professional architect, a construction expert and a developer. The aim of this mentorship is to stimulate and support a young architect’s career as well as to promote cross-sector collaboration and networking.

Previous participants of the CHART ARCHITECTURE competition have been able to develop their ideas and pavilions further. 2016 finalists, architects Sine Lindholm and Mads-Ulrik Husum in collaboration with SPACE10, worked with IKEA in February 2017 to release the open-source plans for a DIY version of the Spherical Garden, one of last year’s CHART ARCHITECTURE pavilions.

For the 2017 competition, open-source plans for DIY versions of the one chosen pavilions will be released in collaboration with SPACE10 after CHART.

Design Competition at CHART ART FAIR 2017

Location: Copenhagen, Denmark

The competition brief will be published on 7 April 2017 at 12 noon and will be open for entries for 72 hours until 10 April at 12 noon. Five finalists will be selected by the jury and will build pavilions for CHART taking place 1-3 September 2017.

The official theme THE LIVING CITY will be launched during CHART’s first satellite event for 2017 on 21 March at 5pm in collaboration with Realdania. The event is free and open to all. The launch will include a welcome by Anne Skovbro, Philanthropy Director – CPO, at Realdania; an introduction to the competition by former finalists Sine Lindholm and Mads-Ulrik Husum; a presentation of the brief and introduction of the 2017 theme by Simon Friese, Director of CHART ART FAIR; and an inspirational talk by Bjørnstjerne Christiansen and Simon Frommenwiler.
