CHART 2018 Architecture Winners

“Tight Knit” was announced as the CHART 2018 Architecture Winners. The design draws from the oldest traditions of craft – knitting and weaving.

CHART is pleased to announce “Tight Knit” as the winner of the 2018 Architecture Competition. “Tight Knit” was designed by Jan Sienkiewicz, student at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and Uta Sienkiewicz, student at University of the Arts London Central Saint Martins. Drawing from the oldest traditions of craft – knitting and weaving, the duo turned them into rituals of collective empowerment. The key element – the modular loom, can be used repeatedly to produce structures by knitting them from natural woolen yarn, discarded textiles or old plastic wrapping. It becomes a tool for urban hacking, opening the possibility of architectural expression to everyone.

The duo will be offered a mentorship programme in collaboration with Nikoline Dyrup Carlsen, architect and founding partner of Spacon&X, Simon Frommenwiler, architect and co-founder of HHF Architects and Klaus Kastbjerg, CEO and director of Union Holding A/S, to stimulate and support young architects’ careers. This competition will promote networking as well as promoting cross-sector collaboration amongst professionals.

Finalists included: Sum of Us: A Cloud of Human Emotions (Sean Lyon); FRAME (Malte Harrif, Vitus Karsten Bjerre and Katrine Hoff); OPEN RESOURCE (Dennis Andersson, Mikkel Møller Roesdahl and Xan Browne); The Many Chairs Pavilion (Sofia Luna Steenholdt, Joachim Makholm Michelsen, Emil Bruun Meyer and Casper Phillip Ebbesen); Tight Knit (Jan Sienkiewicz and Uta Sienkiewicz)

The pavilion has been awarded by the CHART Architecture 2018 jury consisting of Bjarke Ingels, architect and founder of BIG, Bjarke Ingels Group; Beatrice Galilee, curator of architecture and design at The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art; Ben Clement and Sebastian De La Cour (benandsebastian), artist-duo; Simon Frommenwiler, architect and co-founder of HHF architects; Susanne Ottesen, owner of Galleri Susanne Ottesen and co-founder of chart; Thomas Lommée, founder and partner of OpenStructures and Intrastructures.

The CHART Architecture competition, a key element of CHART SOCIAL, was launched in 2014 with the intention of promoting young Nordic architects and exploring the crossover between art, design and architecture. In 2018, CHART extended the call for applications to young and newly established architectural professionals, as well as students and recent graduates from the Nordic architecture schools. Five finalists were selected by this years judges and were chosen to design pavilions to house gastronomy partners and SPACE10 during CHART ART FAIR.

Five finalists will be selected by this year’s panel of renowned judges. The winners of the competition will design pavilions to be presented during the 2018 edition of CHART.
Open to: Young professionals in the field of architecture, students and recent graduates from the Nordic architecture schools
Judges include: Bjarke Ingels, Beatrice Galilee, benandsebastian, Thomas Lommeé and Simon Frommenwiler.
