An Ideas Competition
AA Hooke Park Design Competition
11 Dec 2015: Registration deadline
The AA community is invited to take part in an ideas competition for the new central academic facility at Hooke Park. A design and learning strategy is sought that will inform the design development and construction of Wakeford Hall. The competition is open this autumn, with entries due by January 8, 2016. The competition winner(s) will be invited to collaborate with AA Design & Make students during the development of the project, expected to be fully designed and built during two academic years, beginning in early 2016.
Wakeford Hall will be a new, centrepiece building designed and built by AA students and staff. It will be located in Hooke Park, Dorset, and is named in recognition of the Horace and Ellen Hannah Wakeford Bequest, given to the AA for the purposes of supporting teaching and learning at Hooke Park. This new central academic facility will house teaching, office and library spaces, including a new lecture, presentation and public hall.

Hooke Park Since 2011 AA students and staff have designed and realised seven new buildings, all located in the centre of Hooke Park’s working woodland. Wakeford Hall is planned as a new teaching, learning and public room at the heart of the woodland, academic and public activities in Hooke Park. Recently-completed buildings include student lodges; an alternative energy system, the ‘big shed’ workshop; a timber-drying shelter; and caretaker’s house. Other buildings include the refectory and main workshop designed by Frei Otto and Richard Burton.
A Call for Entries The ideas competition is open to all Subscribing Members of the Architectural Association, including students, tutors, graduates and other members of the AA. Competition requirements focus on the delivery of innovative timber and other woodland technologies, related to innovative teaching and learning ideas. The competition opens 12 October 2015 and final submissions are due by 5pm 8 January, 2016. All participants are invited to tour Hooke Park and visit the site at an open day, on 31 October 2015.
