King’s Cross Pop Up
King’s Cross station is one of London’s iconic buildings. Its tough, functional exterior is a prototype of modern architecture in the 20th Century, and stands in stark opposition to the neo- Gothic extravagance of its neighbour St Pancras.
After many decades of partial-neglect, King’s Cross has finally received the renovation it has always deserved by John McAslan + Partners, the architects behind such notable projects as the Camden Roundhouse, the De La Warr Pavilion and Peter Jones. With a fabulous new concourse and a painstaking restoration of original features hidden for far too long behind 1970s extensions, King’s Cross has finally been revealed in all its glory.
illustrator : Lucy Dalzell ; Pop-Up design: Corina Fletcher
Discovering King’s Cross pays tribute to this magnificent building. Illustrated by emerging talent, Lucy Dalzell, the book is richly visual, bringing to mind the work of JS Lowry. A foreword by Michael Palin and a piece by Dan Cruickshank frame the fascinating story of the station through the ages. Interactive elements throughout the book lead to the crescendo of a single, enormous, spectacular pop-up of the station by one of the most established paper engineers in the country.

King’s Cross Pop Up Book Review by e-architect:
Brilliant book for all ages. This is one of the rare books an adult can read alone or together with children of all ages without having to dumb themselves down. It is historically informative about both the buildings in the Kings Cross area and how the inhabitants might have lived through the ages, and the reader is treated to some historical facts about the four most important trains to terminate at Kings Cross.
The graphics are great and the pop-up mechanisms are great and reveal the station’s many facets. Excellent book!
