In the heart of Geraardsbergen lay a fragmented site: a patchwork of altered houses and annexes, lacking coherence or narrative. The project began with a deliberate intervention: all secondary structures were removed. Only the 18th-century manor house was preserved, together with the imposing brick party walls of the adjoining buildings.
Against this context, a new volume was introduced, presenting itself as a pared-back structure. Where the manor and the exposed walls express their character in brick and craftsmanship, the new building speaks in glass and concrete. There is no cladding or decoration to conceal the structure.
Services are not hidden but articulated as an architectural element that weaves through the building. The architecture avoids camouflage, opting for uncompromising clarity: a radical functionality set in contrast with its surroundings.
Inside the manor, the tower was hollowed out. With all floors removed, a tall vertical void emerged, animated by a steel stair suspended on cables. The stair makes a soft, flowing gesture, linking the offset levels between the manor and the new volume.
The new building organizes its program in layers: an event hall with terrace and garden at ground level, co-working and studios above, a restaurant-bar at the street front, and apartments on the upper levels. The result is a layered structure with an open framework where encounters and exchanges arise naturally.
TRAVOO transforms a fragmented inner-city site into a new urban fragment. The project brings work, living and hospitality together in an open environment that encourages interaction and generates urban vitality.
The architecture is a confrontation between two ways of building: the historical and the contemporary, the ornamental and the functional, enclosure and transparency, craftsmanship and reduction. Its meaning lies in the contrast: here, building is no longer a neutral act but a way of making time tangible.
