Sports architecture supremo to discuss 2012 stadium design at World Architecture Festival
Rod Sheard, Populous, joins prestigious WAF line up
Rod Sheard, Senior Principal at global design practice Populous, who is at the forefront of the design and build of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, will be discussing the Stadium’s design and resource challenges as part of the seminar programme at the World Architecture Festival, in Barcelona at the Centre Convencions International Barcelona (CCIB) from 4th to 6th November 2009.
Rod Sheard appears at World Architecture Festival Awards Seminars 2009, CCIB, Barcelona, Spain:
He will be joined by Paul Westbury, Principal at Buro Happold and other invited guests as they discuss how the stadium differs from previous Olympic stadia in that a large part of it is designed to be temporary. An arena with such a large demountable element and mix of temporary and permanent seating has never been attempted before, yet in an age when sustainability is the byword and mantra for architectural design the London 2012 stadium fits the challenging design and engineering brief perfectly.
The seminar takes place on Wednesday 4th November and forms part of the ‘Less Does More’ series at WAF. The 2012 Stadium will also be explored at the WAF thematic exhibition, which in a reflection of the current global climate is themed around ‘Less Does More’ and will examine the challenges facing architects to produce more value for less cost.
Rod Sheard, who has worked on the 2012 Olympic Stadium since 2007, has a passion for clear, articulate design and sports architecture. Sheard’s fingerprints are on many of the well known, multi-award-winning new stadia that appear on our screens, from Arsenal football club’s state-of-the-art Emirates Stadium, the redesign of the world-famous Centre Court at Wimbledon through to the iconic Wembley Stadium.

The World Architecture Festival is the world’s biggest architectural summit and will take place in Barcelona for the second year running at the Centre Convencions International Barcelona (CCIB) from 4th to 6th November 2009. The Festival features the word’s largest architectural Awards programme – the World Architecture Festival Awards, which celebrate the work, concerns and aspirations of the international architectural community.
Unlike other award schemes the WAF Awards give access to something more often reserved for a select few – to see shortlisted architects present their schemes live to international judging panels, including the likes of Sir Peter Cook, Kengo Kuma, Renato Benedetti and Will Alsop, and delegates, as they compete for the ultimate accolade of World Building of the Year 2009 and other awards.
